Description
Papa is the father of the household in the anime Washimo and one of the main characters in the story. From childhood he was skilled at working with machines and built his first robot while he was still in elementary school. As an adult, he works as an engineer who develops machines. His most significant creation is Washimo itself: after the children's beloved grandmother died, his young daughter Hiyori would not stop crying, so Papa built a humanoid robot that looked exactly like the grandmother, complete with her dentures, in order to comfort her.
In personality, Papa is gentle, kind, and warm, and he is almost always shown with a smile on his face. He loves his family deeply and hopes to be a father whom his children can respect and look up to. He is, however, somewhat timid and weak-willed, especially in front of his wife, Mama, and he tends to defer to her. He is also modest about his own work, and he is surprised by how humanlike Washimo's personality turned out to be even though the robot is his own invention.
His main motivation is the happiness and well-being of his family. Building Washimo was an act of devotion meant to help his daughter through her grief, and in everyday life he quietly supports the household. He usually comes across as mild and unremarkable, but he can show a different side. In one storyline, he catches his wife just as she is about to fall and suddenly appears so dashing that his children are completely charmed, almost as if he had become a different person. On that occasion he is strangely cold only toward Washimo, which leads Washimo to try to uncover the secret behind his unusual behavior.
As for abilities, Papa is a capable inventor and engineer, able to design and build functioning robots from childhood onward, including a robot so carefully crafted that it closely resembles a real person and carries the grandmother's dentures, which produce a clattering sound as it walks. His development as a character is shown mainly through small everyday episodes, which reveal that he is more capable and surprising than his ordinary, gentle manner suggests, while remaining a devoted and caring father.
