Description
Papa emerged in Fujio Akatsuka's manga as a foolish father to Bakabon, later becoming the series' focal point due to heightened narrative appeal. Akatsuka modeled Papa's traits on his own father Toshichi, especially personality shifts after Siberian detention, eventually identifying so closely with the character that he cosplayed him with a drawn mustache.

Physically short—often matching his son’s height—Papa sports deep forehead wrinkles, a nose-hair-like mustache, and two protruding front teeth. His signature look includes a "ribbon hachimaki" headband, haramaki belly-band, long-sleeved shirt, blue or lavender pants, and sandals. Early art depicted a longer head and Charlie Chaplin-esque mustache, later streamlined with the series’ evolving style.

Papa’s extreme foolishness fuels chaotic antics, from misguided boredom cures to illogical solutions causing property damage or endangering others. He stubbornly denies blame yet occasionally solves problems via absurdity, like exposing an alien neighbor through sheer suspicion. Deceptively labeled honest by his wife, he lies skillfully while condemning dishonesty in others, masking erratic behavior with underlying family devotion.

His speech features "Kore de ii no da!" ("This is how things should!"), the greeting "Konyanachiwa," and the suffix "na no da," often accompanied by "Tarirariran" singing. He relishes stir-fried liver with leeks (rebanira), watermelon, and octopus legs but despises chikuwabu, alongside smoking and drinking.

Born Christmas night 1926, Papa displayed infant genius—speaking, comprehending economic papers, and inventing complex devices by two months old. A sneeze allegedly dislodged a "brain gear," causing permanent decline. Childhood nicknames "Carroll" and "Norse" (for absent-mindedness) preceded his upbringing in Kikuchi, Kumamoto—arbitrarily chosen by Akatsuka via an assistant’s origin. After Shichijo Junior High, he moved to Tokyo, attending Bakada High and Bakada University, excelling in philosophy. He courted his future wife (a Kuroyuri Girls’ School student) with pampas grass; she proposed after he mistakenly assaulted a vagrant he believed was her ex-lover.

Though conceived as jobless, Papa failed catastrophically at numerous roles: shoe salesman (ate merchandise), salaryman, portrait painter, soba shop owner, cosmetics salesman, monk, night watchman, carpenter, dry cleaner, and chili pepper taste-tester—reinforcing his "wandering vagabond" essence. Hobbies include running, haiku, skiing, swimming, and "cat skating" (felines tied to feet). He communicates with octopi and kappa, plays vomit-inducing violin, and struggles with kanji.

Within his family, Papa interacts with pragmatic wife Mama—who endures his chaos despite frustration—and son Bakabon. He shows no affection toward his mother, demanding repayment of a 20-year loan upon reunion. Younger son Hajime contrasts as an intellectual prodigy.

Papa’s fictional blood type "BAKA" reportedly sweetens post-alcohol. He lacks a given name, referred to only as "Bakabon’s Papa" or "Papa," with aliases like "Fuchio Tanakada" used prankishly.
