Description
Satella is a silver-haired half-elf with amethyst-blue eyes and pointed ears. Legend states her appearance mirrors Emilia's, a resemblance causing Emilia significant prejudice. Manifestations often obscure her form with shadows or dark mist, though depictions show her in dark-purple clothing with golden accents: a mini-dress, thigh-high socks, and a veil.

Satella and the Witch of Envy exist as distinct personalities within the same entity. The Witch of Envy emerged when Satella absorbed the incompatible Witch Factor of Envy 400 years ago. Both personalities love Subaru, but the Witch of Envy exhibits extreme possessive aggression. Satella's original personality is earnest, reckless, pure, and caring toward Subaru's well-being. Historical accounts from companions like Alec Hoshin confirm her kindness and determination.

400 years prior to the main events, Satella journeyed with figures including Echidna, Flugel, Reid Astrea, and Volcanica to save the world. After absorbing the Envy Witch Factor, she lost control, triggering the Great Calamity. This event killed six other Witches of Sin and nearly destroyed the world. Despite efforts by Volcanica, Reid, and Flugel, her immortality made her unkillable. They sealed her within the Evil Sealing Stone Shrine near the Augria Sand Dunes. The Pleiades Watchtower was later constructed to monitor this seal.

Despite imprisonment, Satella maintains a connection to Subaru. She summoned him to her world and granted him the Authority of Envy, Return by Death, enabling him to reverse time upon dying. She enforces strict rules: Subaru cannot reveal this ability. Attempts trigger her manifestation of shadow hands to crush his heart or kill others—especially Emilia. On rare occasions, she has possessed Emilia's body to interact with Subaru directly.

Her abilities include:
* **Immortality**: External forces cannot destroy her body, a trait potentially linked to her half-elf lineage.
* **Shadow Manipulation**: She generates shadows that erode matter and abstract concepts like memories. This includes creating tendrils, devouring environments, nullifying physical attacks, and forming thousands of shadow hands. Later arcs describe these shadows as weaponized miasma.
* **Time Manipulation**: She stops time around Subaru when he violates their contract.
* **Authority of Envy**: Its full capabilities remain unknown, though it may remotely affect targets' emotions.
* **Yin Magic Proficiency**: She creates advanced magic constructs, such as a directed version of Shamak.

Her relationships involve obsession and unresolved connections:
* **Subaru**: She loves him obsessively, claiming he "gave her light" and ended her loneliness. Her motivations for granting Return by Death are unclear; Echidna speculates it was to challenge fate.
* **Emilia**: Emilia is hinted as her descendant or to share her "cursed bloodline." The Witch of Envy specifically targets Emilia if Subaru reveals Return by Death to her.
* **Witches of Sin**: Most witches hate the Witch of Envy but not Satella. Echidna harbors unexplained animosity toward both personalities.
* **Volcanica & Flugel**: Volcanica initially respected Satella but later attacked her under the Witch of Envy's influence. Flugel helped seal her and built countermeasures against her return.
* **Al**: He implies a past with her and notes she refuses to acknowledge him. In Arc 9, he orchestrates her incomplete summoning to combat Reinhard.

Her manifestations have escalated, progressing from brief encounters during Subaru’s death sequences to physical invasions like the Arc 4 Sanctuary attack. In Arc 6, she repeatedly destroyed the Pleiades Watchtower when Rui Arneb latched onto Subaru.
