Description
Reiko Ichinose inhabits a crumbling neighborhood bordering an ancient forest, laboring in the sex trade under the shadow of societal scorn. She bore her son, Kai, at fifteen amid ambiguous paternal circumstances, weathering relentless condemnation from locals who brand her irresponsible and immoral. Yet her bond with Kai remains unshaken—a sanctuary of trust forged through shared defiance of judgment.

Born and raised on the forest’s edge, she transitioned from bar work to a brothel, where Kai grew up assisting with minor tasks, his childhood threaded with the rhythms of her unconventional livelihood. Though acutely aware of the community’s contempt, Kai clings to unwavering respect and devotion for her, their relationship a testament to quiet fortitude.

When the suffocating constraints of their existence threaten Kai’s future, Reiko chooses sacrifice over solace, relinquishing his care to Sosuke Ajino, the piano teacher whose reverence for the boy’s talent eclipses curiosity about his origins. Ajino’s refusal to indulge in gossip cements her trust, positioning him as Kai’s unlikely guardian.

Years later, Reiko emerges at a pivotal recital where Kai and Ajino perform, flanked by neighbors from their marginalized enclave. Her presence—a silent roar of pride—bridges her enduring advocacy for her son and solidarity with those who share their fractured world.

Her name, 怜子 (“wise child”), and surname, Ichinose (一瀬, “one rapids”), etch her identity: a woman navigating turbulent currents with unyielding resolve.
