Description
Sōsuke Ajino, once a prominent Japanese pianist destined for international acclaim, possessed a custom grand piano with an exceptionally heavy keyboard only he could master, producing extraordinary sound. A devastating car accident abruptly ended his career, injuring his left arm and claiming his fiancée's life, triggering an emotional collapse. He sold his prized instrument to a Morinohata red-light district nightclub.

Unable to forsake music completely, he initially taught at a music university but struggled to find students with compelling interpretations. After a decade, he resigned to search for his former piano. He found it severely damaged and unusable within Morinohata's forest. Remaining in the area, he accepted a position as music teacher at Moriwaki Elementary School.

Three years later, he encountered Ichinose Kai, a student claiming to play a piano in the nearby forest. Ajino witnessed Kai's innate ability to play the damaged instrument others could not operate. Recognizing Kai's raw talent, Ajino became his mentor, refining his technique while preserving his unique musicality. He emphasized individuality in interpretation, sometimes causing friction in formal competitions favoring traditional styles.

Ajino's mentorship extended beyond technique; he acted as Kai's surrogate father, supporting his emotional and artistic development. He prepared Kai for the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, navigating challenges like Kai's non-traditional background and resistance to structured learning. Drawing on his own experiences and losses, Ajino helped Kai channel personal struggles into musical expression, proving pivotal in Kai's rise as a renowned pianist.

Throughout Kai's competitions, Ajino confronted figures from his past, including pianists mimicking his pre-accident style. These encounters highlighted his evolution from a performer focused on technical perfection to a mentor valuing emotional authenticity. His relationship with Kai facilitated his own healing, renewing his purpose through teaching. The forest piano's subsequent destruction by lightning coincided with Ajino shifting his focus entirely toward nurturing Kai's future.
