Description
Hinata Aoi is a second-year student at Yumenosaki Academy and a member of the idol unit 2wink, which operates under Cosmic Production. He is the older twin brother of Yuta Aoi and serves as the leader of their duo unit. In the anime film Road to Show!!, Hinata travels to New York alongside several other idols to attend the Idol Film Festival, an event where films featuring various Ensemble Square idols are being showcased.
Hinata is known for his cheerful, energetic, and mischievous personality. As the older twin, he tends to act quickly and sometimes rushes into decisions, but he is deeply fond of his brother and always thinks of Yuta first. His lively nature extends to his performances, where his singing voice is described as warm and lively, and his stage presence is irregular but full of freedom. He is often seen with a smile, and his appearance includes medium-length orange hair parted in the middle secured with pink clips, green eyes, and a tendency to wear his school uniform untucked with a pair of hot pink headphones around his neck. The relationship with his twin brother, Yuta, is the most significant in Hinata's life. They are almost always together, and Hinata has even been known to switch places with Yuta in class for fun. Their bond has been shaped by a difficult family past; their mother died when they were young, and their grieving father expressed repulsion at being unable to tell them apart, calling them monsters. This trauma caused the twins to rely solely on each other, and they once ran away from home before being taken in by a kind restaurant owner. As a result of his father's behavior, Hinata has made a conscious decision to never treat others as less than human, and the twins currently maintain a distant relationship with their father, treating him as a stranger.
In the Road to Show!! film, Hinata's role extends into the story's conflict. During the after-party for the film festival, he and Rei Sakuma are confronted by Mitsunari Samejima, an idol from Rhythm Link who taunts Hinata by suggesting that having a twin to act as his body double is his only valuable asset. Later, while sightseeing in New York with fellow idols, Hinata chases a pickpocket through the Chelsea Market area, demonstrating his willingness to take swift, direct action. This event is part of a larger plot by Samejima to frame another idol and exact revenge on Ensemble Square.
Beyond his relationship with his brother, Hinata is part of the Light Music Club at school and shares a dorm room with Hiiro Amagi and Niki Shiina at Starmony Dorm. He is also one of the summit advisors for Cosmic Production at Ensemble Square. His abilities include a specialty in synchronized swimming, and his hobbies are listening to music and pretending to hold concerts.
