Description
Gunther is the father of Myne, Tuuli, and Kamil, and husband to Effa. He serves as head of their lower city family in Ehrenfest and works as a soldier. Initially a captain at the city's southern gate, he was promoted to gate commander after Kamil's birth and later assigned to oversee the northern gate during regular guard rotations.

He possesses blue hair, light brown eyes, and a muscular build described by Myne as "mean-looking." His standard work uniform is a blue tunic.

Fiercely devoted to his family, Gunther often discusses his daughters and exhibits unwavering protectiveness. He risked execution by confronting the High Bishop's attendants to prevent them forcibly taking Myne to the temple. He becomes jealous or pouty if his daughters praise other men without acknowledging him, but easily brightens when they affirm his importance. Gunther shares a trait with Myne: charging headfirst toward goals while ignoring consequences, which Effa believes influences Myne's behavior. Driven by pride as a father, he secretly studies literacy after Myne begins learning from Otto. His love for his family motivated his career choice, and he enjoys drinking refreshing behelle after work.

Gunther is the son of a woodworker who dreamed of becoming a knight after hearing minstrel tales. Unable to achieve this as a commoner, he became a soldier. He apprenticed under Effa's father, the gate commander, fell in love with Effa at first sight, and persistently visited her daily. He proposed by presenting a magic stone acquired from slaying a feybeast, pledging to protect the city and his family. His dedication earned him the rank of captain by Myne's fifth birthday. He facilitated Otto's employment as a soldier after Otto sought citizenship to propose to Corinna.

During Myne's early struggles, Gunther supported her efforts to build stamina and allowed Otto to teach her reading. When the High Bishop attempted to seize Myne, Gunther fought off three priests, triggering events leading to Myne's mana outburst and adoption by the archduke. In Part 2, after Damuel warned of threats, Gunther alerted gate commanders. His superior's delay allowed Count Bindewald's devouring soldiers to enter the city and attack Myne and Tuuli; Gunther intervened, killing one assailant and aiding Damuel and Otto. Later, during Bindewald's direct assault, Gunther sustained severe injuries defending Myne. After her adoption, he signed a magic contract severing familial ties and attended her symbolic funeral.

In Part 3, promoted to gate commander following his predecessor's likely execution for disobeying nobles, Gunther maintained discreet contact with Rozemyne (formerly Myne), observing her at ceremonies or leading guard details during her Hasse visits. Interactions remained constrained by the magic contract. By Part 4, his guard unit rotated to the north gate. Reduced contact with Tuuli and Lutz—now live-in apprentices—in Part 5 frustrated him, leading him to gather information from temple guards during patrols; he reciprocated by assisting them in the southern forest. During a noble disturbance at the west gate, he confronted Lady Clarissa, who claimed ties to Rozemyne's retainer Hartmut. Unyielding even when threatened by her guard knight, he suggested she send an ordonnanz for verification. He eavesdropped on discussions about Rozemyne's life, later sharing updates with Effa. After submitting notice of his intent to leave Ehrenfest with Rozemyne, he was demoted to captain to facilitate preparations and placed in charge of apprentice soldiers.

Gunther possesses woodworking skills, though not professional, and combat proficiency from soldier training. He single-handedly defeated multiple grey priests and engaged devouring soldiers. His relationships highlight his role as a doting father and loyal husband. He shares a close bond with Otto, often confiding over drinks, and introduced him to gate employment. Despite the enforced separation, he persistently seeks connections to Rozemyne, underscoring his unwavering familial devotion.
