OVA
Description
Hiroshi Umino is a young human male from Earth, identified by wavy brown hair and brown eyes. His visual depiction varies: the manga uses the standard Leiji Matsumoto style featuring an ovaloid body and disproportionately large head, while the OVA presents a more balanced facial structure, sometimes with hair partially obscuring his face, and adds gloves to his typical outfit of jacket, shirt, pants, and shoes.

Driven by a desire for freedom and autonomy from Earth's oppressive conditions, Hiroshi seeks escape. In the manga, he builds a homemade spaceship, crashing on Mars's moon Deimos. There, Emeraldas advises him and later gifts him her late husband Tochiro Oyama's Cosmo Dragoon laser pistol, a weapon that becomes symbolic of his journey. Emeraldas subsequently reveals Hiroshi's true identity as Zero Banno, son of an explorer executed for inciting rebellion in a forced labor camp. This familial disgrace fuels his quest for a new beginning under an assumed name. The OVA adaptation depicts Hiroshi leaving Earth as a stowaway on a freighter. After an attack, Emeraldas rescues him and similarly presents him with Tochiro's Cosmo Dragoon, integrating him into larger conflicts involving Emeraldas's battles against Queen Baraluda and the Metanoids.

Hiroshi's personality centers on resilience and self-reliance. He sustains himself through various jobs like mechanic and waiter, enduring harsh circumstances while maintaining ambition. However, he exhibits limits to his tolerance, confronting his employer's spoiled daughter over her disrespect toward Emeraldas. His determination and refusal to succumb earn respect from allies and figures like Emeraldas, who sees her younger self in his spirit. His abilities include engineering prowess, demonstrated by building and piloting his spacecraft, and marksmanship with the Cosmo Dragoon, which he masters through experience; the weapon functions as an empathic device, firing only when aligned with the wielder's resolve.

Hiroshi's development involves significant trials. In the manga, working on Ganymede, he faces betrayal when his boss's daughter attempts to murder him by sealing him in a mine shaft. After her execution and his boss's sacrificial aid, Hiroshi flees authorities. His journey concludes with a cryptic suggestion from Emeraldas about a shared, unresolved destiny. The OVA expands his role into larger conflicts, teaming with Emeraldas to defeat antagonists like a cyborg mass murderer and the resurrected Goddess Siren, showcasing his growth from an isolated runaway to a capable ally who often coordinates attacks with her against shared threats. The etymology of his name—"Hiroshi" meaning "wide/open" and "Umino" meaning "sea field"—reflects his yearning for freedom, while his true surname "Banno" (associated with "barbarian") signifies his family's disgraced status.
