Description
Tetsu Mizuhara, a childhood companion of Suzu Urano, shares a lifelong connection rooted in shared history. In his youth, he endured the tragic loss of his older brother, a Naval Academy student who drowned during a ferry accident amid stormy seas. Suzu, moved by his grief, sketched "Sea Waves and White Rabbits" as a gesture of solace, forging an enduring bond through her art.

Drafted into the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II, he served aboard the heavy cruiser *Aoba*, surviving pivotal engagements like the Coral Sea and Savo Island. The vessel, crippled by a submarine strike, ultimately sank in Kure Harbor under U.S. bombardment in 1945. On a brief shore leave in December 1944, he sought out Suzu—now wed to Shusaku Hojo—and implored to stay overnight. In a vulnerable moment, he confessed lingering affections, which she gently deflected, honoring her marital vows.

Postwar, he reappears alone at Kure’s docks, gazing at the *Aoba*’s rusting hull beneath the waves. Unseen by him, Suzu lingers nearby, their proximity unacknowledged. His survival of the ship’s destruction and contemplative postwar existence hint at resilience, though his inner turmoil remains veiled. Expanded accounts delve deeper into his wartime service and pivotal encounters but omit details of his later life.
