Description
Kazan is a character who appears first in Battle Spirits Shounen Gekiha Dan and continues into Battle Spirits Brave. He is known by the alias Cursed Kazan and is recognized for his steadfast loyalty and his rise to a prominent leadership position.

In terms of background, Kazan comes from the future alongside his master, Yuuki Momose. He initially serves as one of Yuuki's followers, carrying out various missions. A significant early task he undertakes is an attempt to seize control of a village, an effort that ultimately fails when he is defeated in a card battle by the protagonist, Dan Bashin. Despite being mocked by his peers for this and other failures, his loyalty to Yuuki never wavers.

Kazan's personality is defined almost entirely by his devotion. He is depicted as a character who follows orders without question, even when he holds private doubts about his master's decisions. This unwavering commitment is a core part of his nature, deeply ingrained and resistant to change until a pivotal moment arises. His appearance reflects his allegiance over time; in Gekiha Dan, he wears a light violet uniform, while in Brave, his outfit changes to a blue ensemble that includes a matching cap. He has a dark complexion and distinct yellow hair.

His primary motivation shifts throughout the story. For a long period, his actions are driven solely by his duty to Yuuki. However, his true motivation reveals itself when Yuuki decides to change sides and ally with Dan and the core soldiers against the Otherworld King. Rather than seeing this as a betrayal, Kazan remains loyal because he sees a reflection of his former captain in Yuuki. He solidifies this new direction by giving Yuuki a card from that captain, symbolizing his full endorsement of Yuuki's choices. By the events of Brave, his motivation has expanded to a larger cause, as he works to lead humanity's forces in a war against the mazoku.

Kazan’s role in the story evolves significantly. In Gekiha Dan, he is a secondary antagonist, a loyal soldier who engages in direct combat and confrontations with Dan and his allies. He is present during the construction of the red horizon ladder and attempts to stop the core soldiers from freeing enslaved Otherworlders, which results in a physical confrontation with Mai. He also stands by during a tournament where Dan loses and has his deck confiscated, even volunteering his own deck for a subsequent duel. In Brave, his role transitions from a frontline battler to a strategic commander. He becomes the chief of humanity's forces, taking the position previously held by Zolder Grave. As the highest-ranking official, he remains out of direct combat, instead orchestrating the larger war effort. His most crucial action in this role is facilitating Dan's transportation to the future to aid humanity in its struggle against the mazoku threat.

Key relationships define his journey. The most important is his bond with Yuuki Momose, which is the central axis of his character. This relationship evolves from simple master-servant obedience to a more profound connection based on shared ideals and memory of a lost comrade. He also has a functional relationship with Dan Bashin, beginning as an enemy who loses to him and later becoming an ally whose arrival in the future he orchestrates. His relationship with Zolder Grave is also key, as he inherits the position of chief from him, signifying a transfer of authority and trust.

His development is tied directly to his shift in allegiance and responsibility. Kazan transforms from a blindly obedient follower of a seemingly villainous master into a respected leader of humanity. The turning point is accepting Yuuki's choice to change sides, which allows Kazan to apply his loyalty and capabilities to a more heroic cause. He moves from being an agent of conquest to a commander in a war for liberation, demonstrating significant growth in his sense of purpose and moral direction.

In terms of notable abilities, Kazan is a skilled card battler who prefers to use a purple deck, a color that aligns with his attire and often features occult and demonic themes. Among the spirits he is known to use are Skulldemon, Hellscorpio, Skulldevil, and Humpdump. His individual battle record shows a loss against Dan in their first encounter, and during his time as commander in Brave, he does not participate in active duels. Beyond card battling, he is shown to be capable in physical altercations, though not always successfully, as seen when he is incapacitated by a kick from Mai.
