Description
Kenzo Hyodo debuts as a 9-year-old card battler from Earth, entering the Grand Rolo Championship with prior tournament victories. His initial appearance features blue-green hair and eyes, a ladybug-adorned yellow headband, a green-and-white shirt, plaid shorts, and long yellow socks. Specializing in green attribute cards, his deck centers on the X-rare spirit The BladeKingBeast Byak-Garo, which he uses to defeat a possessed Suzuri. Advancing to battle protagonist Dan Bashin, he declares a selfish wish for invincibility, contrasting Dan's altruism. After losing and throwing a tantrum, he befriends Dan. As the bearer of the green core's light, he reluctantly joins Dan's group to save the Otherworld, advocating travel to the green world to aid Kajitsu Momose, whose health is linked to it. He struggles tactically against antagonists like Leon, requiring rescue, and hesitates upon learning the potential personal cost of destroying the Grand Cores. Following reflection, he participates and defeats the Green Pantera robot. He later collaborates strategically, deploying a temporary virus with Mai Shinomiya against the Otherworld King's forces. In the finale, he lends Dan his Byak-Garo and attends a core soldier reunion.
By age 11, Kenzo works as a scientist alongside Stella Korabelishchikov in the future. His appearance evolves: he wears glasses, a white lab coat, and a ladybug necklace replaces his headband; later, he sports a bobcut hairstyle with collared shirts. Though no longer a regular battler, he retains a green deck holding three copies of Byak-Garo. Researching the Otherworld Observation Records, he uncovers the legend of the 12 Zodiac X-rares needed to prevent Earth's reset. When challenged by Plym doubting his strength, he easily defeats her, sparking her romantic interest; Kenzo responds playfully yet aloofly, giving her an autograph. He assists in analyzing the injured mazoku Barone, discovering genetic parallels between humans and mazoku. He later locates the Arctic shrine required to activate the Zodiac X-rares. Following Dan's sacrifice to activate the X-rares, Kenzo returns to his original timeline with Mai and Suzuri, expressing readiness to face past challenges.
His personality blends intellectual maturity with childish traits: he exhibits impatience, quick anger when provoked, and susceptibility to fear under pressure. He shows frustration when characters like Magisa or Stella consistently misname him and maintains a competitive dynamic with Stella in scientific work. Despite early tactical shortcomings, he demonstrates growth in collaborative efforts like his virus deployment with Mai and his analytical role in the future.
In the *Gekiha Dan* manga, he appears as a minor antagonist who allies with Leon in a tag battle defeat against Mai and Kazan. The *Brave* manga depicts his anime storyline largely but omits Stella, portraying him as the sole scientist. His deck consistently utilizes green spirits like Amenborg and Gabunohashi, alongside support cards such as Thorn Prison and Wind Shear magic.
