Description
Kongō commands as flagship of the First Oriental Fleet within the sentient warship collective, the Fleet of Fog. Her mental model manifests as a female figure with long pale-blonde hair styled in two spiked buns, crimson eyes, pale skin, and pale blue lipstick. She consistently wears a dark purple ballgown with a train and dark pantyhose, reflecting Victorian England design influences stemming from her namesake vessel's historical construction in Britain.

Initially defined by extreme emotional detachment and apathy, Kongō demonstrates minimal engagement in direct combat, favoring strategic oversight. She harbors a notable aversion to submerging her vessel form, as it restricts her armament primarily to torpedoes and missiles. An unusual trait involves her unexplained ability to communicate with seagulls.

Her narrative trajectory diverges between media continuities. In the anime series and its film sequels (*Ars Nova DC* and *Cadenza*), Kongō develops an obsessive fixation on eliminating I-401 and its captain, Chihaya Gunzō, following the defection of her sister ships Kirishima and Haruna. This obsession results in her removal as flagship and temporary lockdown by Fleet command vessels I-400 and I-402. Breaking free, she absorbs subordinate heavy cruiser Maya and several light cruisers, fusing their nanomaterials and union cores into a massively overpowered warship construct. During a confrontation with I-401, she annihilates an allied Fog fleet blockading America using her enhanced Super-Graviton Cannon. I-401's mental model, Iona, physically reaches Kongō's deck, establishes a direct link to her union core, and accesses her emotional core in a virtual struggle. Kongō subsequently ceases hostilities, accepts Iona's friendship, and defects from the Fleet of Fog. She chooses independent patrols around Japan rather than joining I-401's fleet, retaining Maya's piano on her deck as a symbol of their bond.

In *Cadenza*, a remodeled Kongō intervenes decisively to save the damaged I-401 from destruction by her sister ship Hiei. She deflects Hiei's Super-Graviton Cannon blast with her own, rams her hull onto Hiei's deck to disrupt its attack, and engages Hiei in close-range combat to cover I-401's advance toward the supreme flagship Musashi. Her mental model appearance features an updated dress and hairstyle while retaining her signature lipstick.

Within the manga continuity, Kongō operates with greater strategic detachment. After I-401 sinks her predecessor Hyūga, Kongō assumes command and resolves to eliminate I-401 personally. She delegates flagship duties to Hiei, who insists on serving as her escort, forcing a transfer of temporary fleet command to Ise. During battle against I-401, Kongō remains vulnerable while deploying specialized "Flagship Equipment," enabling her to summon subordinate union cores and 3D-print new hulls using local nanomaterials. She survives an attack only due to Ashigara intercepting the projectile. After activating the equipment, she summons Fog submarines like I-19 and I-22 to hunt I-401. Later, she shifts focus to attacking the human vessel Matsushima II carrying Chihaya Gunzō. When I-401 destroys an underwater methane hydrate deposit, Kongō's vessel loses buoyancy and mobility. Crippled by corrosive warhead torpedoes, she attempts to destroy Matsushima II using her prow section as a ramming weapon. This fails, but she rescues Gunzō from the sinking vessel, explaining she sensed a "voice" indicating his significance to a future worth preserving. She entrusts him to the heavy cruiser Chōkai.

Her vessel form is a Kongō-class fast battleship displacing 31,780 tons, measuring 222 meters long, with a beam of 33.1 meters and draft of 12.7 meters. It achieves speeds up to 80 knots. Armaments include 30 torpedo tubes, 118 photon cannons, 27 missile launchers, a high-voltage discharger, and a flagship-grade Super-Graviton Cannon. Defensively, it employs Wave-Force Armor (Klein Field). Unique systems include the Mirror-Ring System for energy attack absorption/redirection and the Flagship Equipment for rapid fleet reconstitution.

Key relationships involve her sisters Kirishima, Haruna, and Hiei, all of whom eventually defy the Fleet under different circumstances. She maintains a specific, unexplained attachment to the heavy cruiser Maya, persisting even after learning Maya's mental model functioned as an observation program spying on her for the Fleet. Repair vessel Akashi provides direct support. Following her defection or reformation across media, Kongō operates autonomously, maintaining a tentative connection with Iona and acknowledging their friendship while patrolling independently.
