Description
Kenichi Shirahama starts as a timid, regularly bullied high school student marked by cowardice and isolation. His gentle, intellectual side emerges through gardening and reading self-improvement books. Meeting courageous transfer student Miu Fūrinji sparks a transformation, driving him to seek strength. He joins Ryōzanpaku dojo, led by Miu's grandfather Hayato Fūrinji, becoming the disciple of six martial arts masters. Kenichi trains not for power itself, but specifically to protect those he cares about, especially Miu.

Initially recoiling from physical conflict, he endures brutal training only under his masters' coercion. Early struggles involve battling profound fear and self-doubt, often manifesting as attempts to flee danger. Though his masters consistently declare him devoid of natural talent, they recognize unparalleled work ethic and rapid learning capacity. He defies expectations by mastering advanced techniques like the Seikūken in mere days. His growth stems solely from relentless, grueling Ryōzanpaku regimens that forge his physical prowess and combat intuition.

Kenichi develops a pragmatic fighting style blending karate, Muay Thai, jujitsu, and Chinese kenpō. He employs logical battle strategies, unpredictably combining basic techniques to exploit opponents' weaknesses. A signature tactic is the "Ryōzanpaku Rhythm," mimicking his masters' mannerisms mid-fight to disrupt analytical foes. His core moral code dictates combat: he refuses absolutely to hit women and avoids unnecessary harm, adhering strictly to Ryōzanpaku's Katsujin-ken (life-saving fist) principle. This pacifism angers female opponents who view it as condescension, though it springs from genuine belief. Specific berserk buttons trigger fierce reactions, like insults to his courage or threats to loved ones. His lack of killer intent (sakki) functions as both limitation and strength, disarming foes and sometimes converting enemies to allies.

Despite physical transformation, Kenichi retains inherent kindness, politeness, and selflessness. He prioritizes others' safety, even aiding injured adversaries. Humility persists despite defeating formidable opponents like Ragnarok and Yomi members. He befriends former enemies, notably forming a protective bond with Takeda. Occasional perverse tendencies surface, influenced by master Kensei Ma, such as buying clandestine photos of female dojo members. This contrasts his otherwise innocent, flustered responses to accidental nudity or romantic advances. Multiple romantic interests pursue him, including Miu and Renka Ma, though he remains largely oblivious. His relationship with Miu evolves through mutual protectiveness and unspoken feelings, culminating years later in marriage.

Kenichi's journey concludes with implied martial arts mastery surpassing even Hayato Fūrinji. He achieves his core goal of protecting Miu and others, solidifying his guardian role. Post-series, he becomes a renowned novelist while maintaining Ryōzanpaku ties. His legacy embodies strength forged through perseverance and moral conviction, not innate talent.
