Tōsen Shimogamo, known as Mother, is the widow of Sōichirō Shimogamo and matriarch of the Shimogamo tanuki family. After her husband was consumed by the Friday Fellows, she raises their four sons alone, protecting them from rival tanuki families and humans hunting tanuki for hot pot gatherings.
She typically presents publicly in a male human form described as a "Bifauxnen," adopting a notably theatrical or flamboyant demeanor when not working. However, she suffers severe astraphobia, an intense fear of thunder and lightning. During storms, this phobia prevents her from maintaining any transformation, locking her into her true tanuki form until the storm passes.
Despite the Shimogamo family's declined status after Sōichirō's death and her sons being perceived as failures, she expresses unwavering pride in them. Her acceptance is unconditional; she famously states, "I don’t mind what you become, be it a frog or anything else. As long as you exist in this world." This acceptance manifests when she comforts her sons after the traumatic revelation of their father's demise, physically holding them close to provide stability.
Her background reveals she was once the object of affection for Sōun Ebisugawa, Sōichirō's brother. Choosing to marry Sōichirō contributed to Sōun's lasting envy and resentment, indirectly fueling his later betrayal. Her resilience through grief and dedication to preserving her family's unity and well-being define her character.
