Description
Neko musume is a cat yōkai who appears as a supporting character in the anime film Gegege no Kitarō: Daikaijū. She is a half-human, half-yōkai being, often referred to as a hanyō. In her default state, she takes the form of a quiet, unassuming girl with a humanlike appearance. However, when she becomes angry, excited by the sight or scent of fish, or encounters rats—including the character Nezumi Otoko—she undergoes a dramatic transformation. Her eyes turn golden, her mouth stretches into a wide grin filled with sharp fangs, and her fingernails extend into claws, giving her the frightening visage of a bakeneko, a cat monster from Japanese folklore.
Her personality is a mix of shyness and fierceness. She is generally reserved and kind-hearted, but she has a quick temper, especially when provoked by Nezumi Otoko, whom she frequently attacks with her claws. Despite this, she is a loyal friend to Kitarō and the other yōkai, often placing herself in danger to help them. She harbors a quiet romantic interest in Kitarō, though he regards her only as a close friend. This unrequited affection is a consistent element of her character, influencing her desire to be useful and to earn his approval.
In the story of Daikaijū, Kitarō accepts a mission to rescue a little girl's father who vanished while exploring a mysterious island. Neko musume accompanies Kitarō and his companions on this journey, supporting the group in both combat and problem-solving. Her role is that of a dependable ally who contributes through her yōkai abilities rather than taking center stage. She is motivated by a sense of duty to help those in need and by her personal loyalty to Kitarō.
Her key relationships include her adversarial dynamic with Nezumi Otoko, whom she distrusts and often punishes for his selfish schemes. With the other regular yōkai friends—such as Sunakake Baba, Konaki Jijii, and Ittan Momen—she maintains a friendly, cooperative bond, though she is sometimes the target of their teasing about her feelings for Kitarō. Her most important relationship is with Kitarō himself; she looks up to him and wishes to prove herself as a capable fighter and companion.
Over the course of the film, Neko musume does not undergo major personal transformation, but she consistently demonstrates bravery and resourcefulness. She is willing to face powerful enemies despite being outmatched, showing that her courage can overcome her physical limitations.
Her notable abilities stem from her cat ancestry. She possesses superior agility, reflexes, and balance, allowing her to leap and climb with ease. Her senses of sight, smell, and hearing are far sharper than those of humans, making her an excellent scout and tracker. In combat, her primary weapons are her sharp claws and fangs, which she uses to slash and bite opponents. She can also momentarily turn invisible or blend into the shadows, a skill she uses for stealth and evasion. However, she lacks the wide array of supernatural powers that many other yōkai have; her strength is more physical than magical, and she can be subdued by enemies with strong mystical abilities. Despite this, she remains a steadfast member of Kitarō's group, contributing to the success of their mission through her agility, sharp instincts, and determination.
