Description
Neko-Musume, a half-yōkai character created by Shigeru Mizuki, debuted in the 1967 manga story "Nezumi-Otoko and Neko-Musume." While consistently classified as a half-yōkai across official media, this aspect receives limited exploration. Her initial manga appearance lacked her signature ribbon, and she exhibited a dry personality, accepting assassination jobs from Enma-Daiō with little regard for human life.

Her visual design underwent significant transformations across adaptations. The second anime series established her iconic pink ribbon and introduced her red polka-dot dress. Later iterations modernized her look with more human-like feminine features, varied hairstyles, and diverse outfits. The sixth anime series depicted her with a taller, mature physique, pointed ears, and red stiletto heels, sometimes including sheer pantyhose. She retains the ability to transform into a grotesque bake-neko form, featuring golden cat-like eyes, bared fangs, razor-sharp claws, and enhanced cat-like reflexes. This transformation typically occurs when angered, hungry for fish, or encountering rats. In the sixth anime, she demonstrated greater control over this form, using it strategically in battles while largely losing human speech and relying on instinctive howls.

Neko-Musume harbors a persistent romantic interest in Kitarō across nearly all adaptations, though her expressions vary. Earlier portrayals showed her doting on Kitarō and Medama-Oyaji through cooking and shopping, often blushing when Kitarō used nicknames like "Neko-chan." Later series, like the fifth anime, emphasized tsundere tendencies where she masked deeper feelings. Her relationship with Nezumi-Otoko is primarily antagonistic; she frequently punishes him for misdeeds with physical attacks but occasionally collaborates with him or shows concern, such as crying when he faced mortal peril.

Character development is evident in her societal integration. The fifth anime depicted her working human part-time jobs under aliases like Hiromi Nekota, becoming a bridge between yōkai and human communities. This iteration highlighted her familiarity with human customs and friendships with other yōkai like Rokuro-Kubi and the Tengu Police. Despite a generally kind demeanor, she exhibits jealousy toward human women interacting with Kitarō and occasionally struggles with her slow aging process, as seen in the fourth anime where a spell temporarily fulfilled her desire to appear as an adult woman.

Her half-yōkai status occasionally surfaces in storylines. The fourth anime featured a spell transforming her into a human girl holding a cat, referencing her hybrid nature. In "Kitarō: Kunitori Monogatari," she displayed prejudice against Nezumi-Otoko for his mixed heritage, though she herself made derogatory comments about his human blood.
