Description
Neko-Musume is a half-yōkai character from Shigeru Mizuki's works, first appearing in the 1967 manga story "Nezumi-Otoko and Neko-Musume" as a cat hanyō and member of the Kitarō Family. Her regular form presents a human-like appearance, typically wearing a long-sleeve white blouse, pink dress with suspenders, pink shoes, and a pink bow in her hair that projects cat-ear shadows. Her visual design has evolved significantly across adaptations, progressing from slightly grotesque early depictions to more human and feminine looks in later series, incorporating elements like taller stature, sheer pantyhose, and red heels in the 2018 anime.

She involuntarily transforms when angered, seeing fish, or seeing rats, revealing cat-like gold eyes, fangs, pointed ears, and razor-sharp claws. This bake-neko form heightens her reflexes and combat abilities but diminishes speech, leaving her driven by feline instincts. In the 2018 series, she gains control over this transformation, using it strategically in battles.

Her background identifies her as inhabiting GeGeGe Forest. While Mizuki Pro materials classify her as half-yōkai like Nezumi-Otoko, she paradoxically displays occasional prejudice against his human bloodline.

Neko-Musume harbors a persistent romantic interest in Kitarō across nearly all adaptations, though he typically views her platonically. Her dynamic with Nezumi-Otoko is antagonistic due to their cat-rat dichotomy; she punishes his misdeeds by scratching him, making him fear her as a mortal enemy. Despite this, they demonstrate effective teamwork when necessary.

Manga iterations show her attending yōkai primary school with Kitarō, later enrolling at Bizarre Women's University's Strange Studies department in "Zoku GeGeGe no Kitarō," and working part-time jobs to financially support Kitarō and Medama-Oyaji. These elements became standard in the fifth anime adaptation.

A precursor character named Neko appears in "Hakaba Kitarō" rental manga stories. Though sharing transformation abilities and a tragic narrative involving suicide after public exposure of her bake-neko form, she is officially distinct from Neko-Musume.
