Umeka Shōji
Description
Umeka Shōji is a Japanese voice actor and narrator born on August 20, 1985, in Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture. She is affiliated with the talent management firm Aoni Production.
Shōji developed an early interest in voice acting as an elementary school student when she noticed the same voice actor performing in different series. While she also harbored aspirations of joining the Takarazuka Revue and studied at a related school, she ultimately decided to pursue a career in voice acting. She is a graduate of the Joshibi University of Art and Design’s affiliated high school and completed her training at the Aoni Juku Tokyo school, 25th term. Her vocal range spans from an F-sharp to a C, covering two octaves and a fourth.
Her first lead role in a television anime came in 2008 as Sara Bihada in the series Bihada Ichizoku. She is widely recognized for her portrayal of Neko Musume in the sixth GeGeGe no Kitarō anime series, which aired from 2018 to 2020. Initially, Shōji auditioned for the role of the human character Mana Inuyama, but she had hoped to play Neko Musume. After expressing her strong desire for the part, the staff encouraged her to audition specifically for Neko Musume, and she successfully secured the role. In a notable episode from that series, she performed alongside the previous voice actors of Neko Musume from the third, fourth, and fifth series.
Another significant role for Shōji is Amane Sumeragi in the series Waccha PriMagi!. Shōji has described this character as a mission and a destiny for her, as Amane is reminiscent of the male leads from the Takarazuka Revue she once admired. Moreover, the series is directed by Satō Jun’ichi, whose works first inspired Shōji to become a voice actor. The production staff involved former Takarazuka Revue members in episodes centered on her character.
Her extensive list of anime credits includes Josette Capua in The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, Eri Karan in Digimon Universe: Appli Monsters, Aki Koriyama in Tokimeki Memorial 4 Original Animation: Hajimari no Finder, Shiori Fuyumura in SANDA, Aya in Reikenzan: Hoshikuzu-tachi no Utage, and Cyprine and Ptilol in Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal: Season III. In the One Piece franchise, she has voiced the characters Ran, Inazuma following the character's gender transformation, and Sham in the Netflix live-action adaptation. She also voices Yuuko Kumagai and Yuu Kunichika in World Trigger, Lucy McClain in BeyWheelz: Powered by Beyblade, and Suzuka Mizukane in Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045. Shōji has performed the role of Kiki in Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac - Battle for Sanctuary as well as the character Sagiri Sakurai in the Super Robot Wars series of video games.
Beyond anime, Shōji has built a substantial career as a narrator for numerous Japanese television programs on networks such as NHK, TBS, and BS-TBS, including sports broadcasts for the Olympics and the Asian Games. She also provides the Japanese dub voice for foreign actors in international films and television series.
