Description
Medama-Oyaji, also known as Eyeball Father or Daddy Eyeball, originates from the Ghost Tribe and is the father of Kitarō. His existence began as a fully-formed adult Ghost Tribe member named Gegerō, who contracted an incurable "melting disease" causing his body to decay. He wrapped himself in bandages resembling a mummy during this illness. Living in seclusion with his pregnant wife Iwako, he sold his blood for income, inadvertently causing blood transfusion recipients to exhibit ghost-like traits. This drew attention from a blood bank employee named Mizuki, whom Medama-Oyaji persuaded to grant them temporary respite. Both he and Iwako succumbed to illness shortly afterward, but his spirit willed itself into his last intact body part—his eyeball—transforming him into a diminutive, anthropomorphic eyeball with a small, rarely visible mouth underneath. His rebirth was motivated by devotion to his son, who was born posthumously from Iwako’s grave.

Physically, Medama-Oyaji appears as a single giant eyeball with a tiny body, red in coloration, and typically wears no clothing. His pre-decay humanoid form, depicted in the 2018 anime, showed him as a gray-haired man of average height covering his left eye; this representation may reflect his idealized self-image rather than historical accuracy. Despite his minuscule and fragile appearance, his spirit is immensely resilient, allowing him to withstand crushing, deep-frying, or other physical trauma while eventually regenerating to his normal state. He possesses an eyelid appearing as a simple line over his pupil when open, which curves downward during sleep. He retracts or extends his mouth, lacks teeth, and has been depicted with a bronchial tube in later adaptations. He sustains himself on minimal sustenance like morning dew, cherries, plums, or fish eye soup, and can survive a decade without food or water.

His primary role is as Kitarō’s advisor and supporter, leveraging encyclopedic knowledge of yōkai, their weaknesses, and occult phenomena acquired during extensive travels before his rebirth. This expertise includes familiarity with entities like Akuma, ancient Inca lore, and personal connections to figures such as Enma-Daiō, the king of hell, whom he interacts with regularly. His abilities extend beyond knowledge: he substitutes his eyeball form and manipulates his body. Deeply protective of Kitarō and Iwako, he embodies a calm yet tenacious presence during crises despite his vulnerability to being trampled or overlooked due to size.

Medama-Oyaji exhibits distinct habits, notably bathing in small containers like teacups, bowls, or unconventional liquids such as black tea, coffee, sake, or cola, often expressing contentment with phrases like "Ahhh, this is nice!" He cries with the exclamation "To-ho-ho!" and frequently calls out to his son with "Oi! Kitarō!" His personality blends rationality with emotional warmth. He occasionally dons accessories like a silk hat from English demons or a shoe from Santa Claus, harbors a fondness for sake, and maintains cleanliness as a recurring pastime.

His history and traits remain consistent across adaptations. Films like *GeGeGe no Kitarō: Nippon Bakuretsu!!* depict him aiding Kitarō in confronting large-scale threats. The 2023 film *Kitaro Tanjou: GeGeGe no Nazo* revisits his backstory, showing him recalling events from 70 years prior upon entering Nagura Village’s ruins. His spiritual endurance and familial dedication underscore his character across all media, from manga origins to anime series and cinematic releases.
