Description
Medama-Oyaji began as an adult member of the Ghost Tribe, a yōkai who succumbed to an incurable "melting disease." His decayed body transformed, his consciousness reborn from his surviving eyeball into an anthropomorphic form. This rebirth stemmed from devotion to his son Kitarō, born after his death from his buried wife Iwako. Certain media occasionally reference his pre-decay name as Gegerō.

He manifests physically as a single giant eyeball with a small humanoid body. A simple line above his pupil serves as an eyelid for functions like sleeping and crying. A retractable mouth beneath the eyeball allows consumption of foods like cherries, plums, fish eye soup, and morning dew; he lacks teeth and traditional hair. He exhibits resilience, recovering from physical damage such as crushing or deep-frying. A notable preference for cleanliness sees him bathing in small containers like teacups or bowls, sometimes using unconventional liquids such as sake, cola, or coffee.

His abilities include extensive knowledge of yōkai lore and occult subjects, gathered during travels across Earth before Kitarō's birth. He maintains a personal acquaintance with Enma-Daiō, ruler of the afterlife. Post-decay, combat relies on spiritual techniques and body manipulation, not physical strength. Key abilities are:
- **Eyeball substitution**: Functioning as a replacement eye by occupying empty sockets, demonstrated replacing Kitarō's destroyed eye or Amefuri-Tengu's eye.
- **Body possession and manipulation**: Taking control of organic or inorganic matter, such as transforming into a bump on Kitarō's head.
- **Reverse Mochi Murder**: Merging with mochi to form soul-like masses that suffocate targets.
- **Finger Guns (Yubi Teppo)**: Firing potent spiritual energy projectiles; exhausting in his diminished form. In his pre-decay form, he executed this single-handedly and taught it to Kitarō.
- **Internal Electricity**: An offensive ability utilized in his original body.
- **Phantom Train summoning**: Capable of summoning a time-travel train at the cost of his life, usable only once.

His relationship with Kitarō centers on unwavering paternal support, guiding him through yōkai conflicts and human-yōkai diplomacy. He occasionally chastises Kitarō with phrases like "Oi! Kitarō!" but consistently provides tactical and emotional backing. Interactions extend to allies like Neko-Musume and Nezumi-Otoko, though he shows less tolerance for the latter's deceitfulness. Historically, early manga portrayed him as more morally ambiguous, but adaptations softened him into a steadfast ally focused on harmony between humans and yōkai.

Across the franchise, his role evolved from sporadic manga appearances to a consistent presence in anime. The 2018 series depicted a temporary restoration to his pre-decay form via Makura-Gaeshi's dream powers, appearing as a gray-haired humanoid with one eye and Kitarō's hairstyle—potentially reflecting his original appearance. This form showcased enhanced combat prowess, suggesting he was once stronger than Kitarō. His core identity remains defined by sacrifice, wisdom, and paternal dedication regardless of physical state.
