Description
Ittan Momen manifests as a sentient strip of white cotton cloth, typically ten meters long though sometimes depicted shorter. He lacks a visible mouth but possesses thin, pointy eyes without discernible pupils and can extend two arms whose digit count varies by adaptation. His design evolves across media, showing changes in body texture (smooth or wrinkled), eye color (dark blue, cyan, orange), and the later addition of "ears." Despite no mouth, he eats, drinks, and speaks, often using a Kagoshima dialect reflecting his folkloric roots.

Originating from Kagoshima Prefecture tales where such spirits suffocated travelers, this iteration is a benevolent member of the Kitarō Family. He debuted narratively in the 1966 manga story "The Great Yōkai War," perishing when a witch pierced his heart with a poisoned needle, only to return inexplicably later. His anime premiere occurred in 1968.

His primary abilities are flight and constriction, frequently serving as transportation for Kitarō and allies. He carries multiple passengers, though excessive weight or distance depletes his stamina. In combat, he suffocates foes mid-air and has commanded yōkai troops. Weaknesses include scissors, fire, water, and rain—water exposure saps his strength, requiring drying to recover. Torn sections can be repaired by sewing.

Generally good-natured, he exhibits a "war hawk" mentality, preferring confrontation. He maintains meticulous cleanliness, avoiding mechanical washers and dryers due to discomfort with tumbling and heat, opting for hand-washing. Comedic traits vary: the 1985 anime shows him as talkative and faint-hearted; the 1996 version adds a dislike of flies and constriction-based punishments for Nezumi-Otoko; the 2007 iteration emphasizes finicky cleanliness, an initial aversion to children (though he bonds with a helpful girl), and a love of reading. The 2018 anime amplifies his attraction to beautiful women and kimonos, plus a penchant for cloth-related puns.

He appears in all six anime series (1968–2020), evolving from minimal early dialogue to expanded comedic and narrative roles. He participates in events like the Yōkai Rally as a relay vehicle and the Yōkai Baseball Team. Live-action films portray him as more timid. Spin-offs include *Yo-kai Watch* (as a Rank A Mysterious-tribe yo-kai), *Yo-kai Sangokushi*, and *In/Spectre*.
