Description
Nurikabe, a yōkai resembling a massive rectangular wall with limbs and piercing eyes, serves as the steadfast guardian of the Kitarō family. His herculean strength and near-indestructible form allow him to endure flames, molten lava, and brutal assaults, often flattening foes with a decisive "plop down" or ensnaring them within his plastered body. Beneath his stony exterior lie bamboo shoot-shaped bones and a circulatory system, which once led to his demise from blood loss—yet he mysteriously survived later vampire encounters.

The 1985 series sharpens his agility, depicting him materializing instantly to block threats or erupting from the ground. He communicates beyond his name here, voicing preferences and emotions, particularly during a poignant arc where he protects Beniko, a blind girl. This bond fractures when her mother—a dangerous yōkai—endangers the group, testing loyalties and highlighting his capacity for empathy.

A gourmet streak emerges as he savors rice balls and critiques flavors, even sampling antagonist Qi’s suspect pills in *GeGeGe no Kitarō: Saikyō Yōkai Gundan! Nippon Jōriku!!*. Contrasting his usual fearlessness toward rat-like foes, a nightmare of swarming rats exposes hidden psychological fragility.

His simplistic trust occasionally invites exploitation, as seen when Nezumi-Otoko deceives him for personal gain. Despite this, he anchors battles as the frontline bulwark. The 1985 iteration forgoes an origin story but aligns with folklore’s path-blocking entity lore. His design—gray or light-blue with enlarged limbs and eyes—emphasizes a rocky texture and immunity to petrification. Later media introduces familial ties, though these remain extraneous to the 1985 narrative.
