Description
Shintaro Umakai began his career as a Japanese diplomat in Russia. His departure from that post prompted his former fiancée Sophia to enlist in Grigori Rasputin’s Russian Spiritual Corps, sowing seeds of personal conflict that would later escalate. Upon returning to Japan, he earned a teaching degree in Sapporo, Hokkaidō, leading to his recruitment as an instructor for the Lime Unit—five teenage girls wielding supernatural Konjiki abilities. The unit operated from the Amanohara, a demon-powered flying battleship commanded by the benevolent entity Kuki. Shintaro provided academic and emotional guidance to members Momen Sanada, Asa Katou, Sarasa Honda, Kinu Fukushima, and Rinzu Kuroda.
When Lieutenant Commander Masanosuke Date died shielding Sarasa from an enemy assault, Shintaro took command despite his civilian status. He directed the unit’s deployment of spiritual mecha against Rasputin’s forces during the Russo-Japanese War, proving tactically indispensable during the Amanohara’s campaigns, including the push toward Port Arthur.
His mentorship evolved into complex relationships with all five girls, each developing romantic feelings amplified by his interventions in their traumas. He saved Kinu Fukushima’s life by severing her spiritual bond through physical intimacy, simultaneously stabilizing her volatile powers. He helped Rinzu Kuroda overcome emotional isolation by disclosing her father’s death as a rescue attempt, not suicide. These actions repeatedly blurred professional boundaries.
Uniquely, Shintaro sustained the Amanohara’s flight capabilities by periodically transferring sexual energy to Kuki, a role critical across the main series and OVAs. During the OVA *The South Island Dream Romantic Adventure*, the damaged Amanohara grounded for repairs on an island. Amid a local festival, the girls vied for Shintaro’s romantic attention while repelling persistent Russian attacks under his leadership.
His past with Sophia reached a tragic climax when Rasputin sent her to infiltrate the Amanohara and manipulate Shintaro into killing the Lime Unit. After her mission failed, she sacrificed herself to shield him from Rasputin’s final strike, urging him to live on without her. In later OVAs bridging to *Lime-iro Ryūkitan X*, Shintaro neared death after soul extraction during a conflict. The Lime Unit revived him by relinquishing their Konjiki powers, permanently retiring them from combat and cementing their profound shared bonds.
