Description
Inspector Koichi Zenigata is a Japanese Interpol agent singularly dedicated to apprehending master thief Arsène Lupin III. Primarily known by his title, his full name references his heritage as a descendant of the fictional detective Zenigata Heiji, famed for coin-throwing; Zenigata adapts this legacy into a signature handcuff-throwing technique. Early versions identified him as Heiji Zenigata VII, though this blood relation was later deemphasized in favor of Koichi Zenigata. Conceived as Lupin's eternal "human Tom and Jerry" rival, creator Monkey Punch asserted any conclusion to the Lupin III saga required both characters to end as equals.

Typically depicted as a middle-aged man of average height (approximately 5'10" or 175-181 cm) with a muscular build, square jaw, ruddy or dark-toned skin, and cropped black hair, his appearance varies. *The Castle of Cagliostro* portrays a more handsome design than earlier manga or anime iterations. His iconic trench coat, fedora, and suit change color per series: orange in *Part 1*, camel in *Part 2*, light green in *Part 3*, and red in *Part 4*. His build mirrors Lupin's, enabling mutual disguises.

Zenigata balances obsessive determination with underlying compassion. Early manga and *Part 1* anime depicted him as ruthless, corrupt, and violent, evolving into a more sympathetic, boisterous figure by *Part 2*, though core traits of impulsiveness and single-mindedness endure. His life revolves around capturing Lupin, driving extreme actions like resigning from Interpol to pursue independently or retiring to a monastery believing Lupin dead. Despite this, he holds a begrudging respect for Lupin, grieving when the thief appears deceased and occasionally collaborating against greater threats. This dynamic positions them as unacknowledged friends, with Lupin sometimes avenging harm to Zenigata.

Professionally competent, Zenigata uncovers security flaws and arrests numerous criminals beyond Lupin. Interpol tolerates his failures due to this collateral success. He resists bribery and clashes with superiors over corruption, methods, or budgets. His skills include judo, karate, marksmanship with a Colt M1911 pistol, and near-superhuman endurance—waking from a stun gun shock in 30 seconds upon hearing Lupin's name. His handcuff-throwing subdues targets at distance.

Personally messy and domestically neglectful, Zenigata indulges in food or alcohol during depressive episodes. He maintains no long-term romantic attachments, citing his pursuit as incompatible with family life, though *The Mystery of Mamo* briefly references a daughter. Instances of vulnerability include weeping when Lupin shows kindness.

In *From Siberia with Love*, Zenigata appears briefly pursuing Lupin during a Romanov gold heist, limited to standard chase sequences without significant development, as the narrative focuses on Lupin's conflict with Rasputin. Cross-media portrayals include a dedicated 2017 live-action series investigating non-Lupin cases, revealing facets like food preferences and traditional policing methods. In the *Detective Conan* crossover, he assists protecting Vespania's crown jewels and shares a police academy history with Inspector Megure.
