Description
Nuts, whose name is also officially rendered as Natts, is a fairy from the Palmier Kingdom who serves as one of the main supporting characters in Yes! Precure 5 and its sequel series Yes! Precure 5 GoGo!. In his natural form, he is a small brown squirrel-like creature who ends his sentences with the verbal tic "-natts". He can also take a human form, appearing as a young man with blond hair and dark, sun-toned skin who works as the shopkeeper of an accessory store called Nuts House. Within his home kingdom, he is one of the princes and, together with his close friend Coco, a candidate for the throne.
Nuts carries a heavy past. Before the events of the series, the Nightmare organization was hunting for the Dream Collet, a magical book that shelters and protects the fairy creatures known as Pinkies, and Nuts served as its guardian. The enemy agent Kawarino tricked him by disguising himself as a Pinky, and Nuts, believing he was helping, opened the gates of the Palmier Kingdom. This allowed the kingdom to be invaded and its residents to be kidnapped. Consumed by guilt, Nuts sealed himself inside the Dream Collet and fell into a deep sleep, and he wore the key to the kingdom’s gates on a chain around his neck as a constant reminder of his failure. He awakens once the five Pretty Cures have all obtained their powers and joins them as an ally from that point onward.
Personality-wise, Nuts is initially distant, aloof, and cold. The betrayal he suffered left him deeply distrustful of others, and he is so guarded that he does not even accept Coco’s assurances that the Pretty Cures can be trusted. He is stubborn and sharp-tongued, and he dislikes accepting help from anyone when he faces problems. He also believes that the truth should always be told and makes a point of never lying. His reserved nature is not genuine indifference but a shield built from fear of being hurt again, and he warms to people only slowly, over time.
His main motivations grow out of guilt and a sense of duty. In the first series, he is driven to atone for his past mistake by protecting the Dream Collet and helping restore the Palmier Kingdom alongside Coco. In GoGo!, his focus shifts to the larger mission involving the Rose Pact and the legendary Cure Rose Garden. He has read books about the Rose Pact and the Cure Rose Garden and acts as a source of knowledge, offering the team advice when they need to solve riddles and uncover clues.
In the story, Nuts functions as a key supporting figure for the Pretty Cures rather than a fighter himself. He guards the Dream Collet, helps the team understand the mysteries surrounding their mission, and runs Nuts House as his base in the human world. During GoGo!, he helps build the Milky Note, an important device tied to the power of the new ally Milky Rose. Later in the series, he receives the crown of the Palmier Kingdom, which bestows on him the title of king and grants him the ability to summon the Milky Mirror for Milky Rose when it is used together with the Milky Note he constructed.
His relationships are central to his development. Coco is his oldest friend; the two grew up together and, despite very different personalities and an early history of conflict, became close companions. Nuts is also tied to Komachi Akimoto, also known as Cure Mint. Although he initially keeps her at a distance along with the other Cures, he is drawn to her gentle and sincere nature, and their bond deepens after he tastes the bean rice cakes made at her family’s shop and begins giving her honest feedback on her novel writing. Komachi develops romantic feelings for him, and while Nuts is not openly expressive, it becomes clear that he shares a special bond with her. In the final episode of the first series, he entrusts his treasured key to Komachi, a gesture that signals his willingness to let go of the past. Nozomi Yumehara also plays an important role in his growth, as her compassion is what first helps him begin to trust the Cures. Milk, the maid who serves him and Coco, receives calm but firm scolding from him whenever she causes trouble, and he is the first to recognize her when she later appears in GoGo! as Kurumi Mimino. He also forms a working alliance with Syrup, a fairy connected to the Cure Rose Garden who initially keeps his distance before fighting alongside the group.
