Description
Kukuri is a 13-year-old magic apprentice raised by the Old Witch in Jimuna Town. Entrusted to the witch as an infant by a wandering stranger, she later discovers this stranger was the last survivor of the Migu Migu tribe, hunted to extinction for their forbidden dark magic. This heritage makes her the sole practitioner of Guru Guru magic, a geometric summoning art requiring intricate circles drawn with a staff to invoke spells.
Standing just 115 cm tall, Kukuri is acutely sensitive about her appearance. Insults like "steamed octopus" or "fat" provoke fierce reactions, often escalating into violent outbursts. Her personality blends innate gentleness with intense loyalty, especially toward Nike, whom she affectionately calls "Mr. Hero" (Yusha). This devotion sometimes manifests as jealousy, triggering transformations into Devil Kukuri when she perceives threats to their bond.
Kukuri's magical abilities are extensive yet inconsistent, heavily dependent on her emotional state. Success comes when she is happy and dancing during incantations, while insecurity or unhappiness causes failures, potentially summoning unintended entities like Takotaro or Octo-Tim that provoke her demonic transformation. Key spells include offensive ones like "Lizard's Tail" and "Underground Viper" (requiring the Tora fire symbol), protective barriers like "Bemu Bemu Guardian," and utility spells like "Seal Magic Circle" for immobilization. She also displays exceptional luck and skill in games and sports, including rock-paper-scissors and cricket.
Her character evolves across adaptations. Early portrayals emphasize naivety and comedic failures, while later arcs explore her resilience and growing mastery of her heritage. In "Doki Doki Legend Mahoujin Guru Guru," her protective instincts toward Nike intensify, causing immediate Devil Kukuri transformations when emotionally threatened. Kukuri's journey involves reconciling her tribe's tragic history of persecution with her responsibility to reseal the demon lord Giri, originally defeated by the Migu Migu 300 years prior.
Relationships extend beyond Nike, including comedic yet supportive dynamics with characters like Kita Kita Oyaji, whose creepy dances occasionally aid her quests. Her backstory frames Migu Migu magic not as inherently evil, but as a necessary force for good.
