OVA
Description
Mion Sonozaki, heir to the influential Sonozaki family of Hinamizawa, was born July 10, 1968. Initially presented as 14 during the main events of June 1983 (though live-action versions depict her around 17), she enters high school at age 15 in June 1984. As children, she and her twin sister Shion switched identities, leading Mion (originally named Shion) to receive the family's demon tattoo and inherit the leadership responsibilities it symbolizes; she typically conceals the tattoo with makeup during events like beach outings.

Physically, Mion possesses long mint-green hair, often tied in a ponytail with a yellow band, turquoise eyes, and stands 165 cm tall. Her school uniform consists of a white shirt, a red or green tie, a yellow vest, and a magenta skirt. Casually, she favors a yellow shirt over a black turtleneck, blue jeans, and an airsoft gun holster, though the weapon is rarely used. Ten years after the Great Hinamizawa Disaster, in Taraimawashi-hen, her adult appearance shows significantly longer hair, extreme pallor, and lifeless eyes due to trauma-induced amnesia and prolonged hospitalization; her motor skills and speech are impaired, resulting in slow, mechanical movements and quiet speech.

Serving as class president and leader of the after-school games club, Mion organizes competitive activities involving board games, card games, or strategy challenges, designing embarrassing penalty outfits for losers. Though initially the club's weakest player, she developed unorthodox winning tactics like marked cards, rule manipulation, or deploying charm to distract opponents. Her competitive spirit coexists with a strong sense of responsibility; she founded the club in 1982 to provide refuge for Satoko and Satoshi Houjou from their abusive aunt.

Mion exhibits a tomboyish, assertive personality, frequently referring to herself as "oji-san" (old man/uncle). Despite this, she harbors a concealed feminine side and romantic feelings for Keiichi Maebara, expressed through teasing and indirect gestures; she becomes flustered when confronted and struggles to confess directly. Her self-image suffered when Keiichi dismissed her interest in girlish items like dolls, though he later rectified this in Minagoroshi-hen by gifting her one—an item she treasures years later.

Her role as Sonozaki heir demands formal, detached conduct during family duties, contrasting sharply with her usual exuberance. She enforces harsh punishments impartially, such as demanding Shion tear off fingernails for defying family rules, though she later inflicts the same punishment on herself out of guilt. Mion also voices traditionalist views, endorsing Oyashiro's curse and condemning those who violate village taboos, reflecting her internal conflict between familial obligations and personal morals.

Unlike other club members, Mion historically resisted Hinamizawa Syndrome's violent paranoia due to her stability and sense of duty. Rika Furude noted Mion never committed murder in the original storylines, attributing this to logical resolve bolstered by her heir status. However, newer arcs like Wataakashi-hen explore scenarios where artificial induction of the syndrome tests this immunity. She possesses combat training, including martial arts and firearms proficiency, and accesses weapons like revolvers or AK-47s as family heir.

Her relationship with Shion involves frequent childhood identity swaps and mutual protection, though Shion resents the unequal distribution of family burdens. Mion's bond with Keiichi remains platonic despite her feelings, though scenarios like Miotsukushi-hen imply potential romantic development. In Rei, set 35 years post-main events, Mion appears as an adult married with a daughter, Tamaki, and remains the active Sonozaki heir under her mother's leadership.
