Description
Satoko Hōjō is a central character originating from the fictional village of Hinamizawa. Her life has been marked by numerous surname changes—Hatake, Yoshizawa, and Matsuura—due to her mother's frequent marriages and divorces. Throughout her childhood, her sole consistent familial bond was with her older brother, Satoshi Hōjō, whom she deeply trusted and relied upon.

Her early years were unstable and traumatic. Satoko often played pranks on her stepfathers, which sometimes provoked severe responses. In one instance, she filed a false abuse report against Mr. Hōjō, even self-inflicting wounds to support her claims. Her mother's constant remarriage and the family's support for the controversial Hinamizawa Dam Project led villagers to brand them as traitors, resulting in distrust and harassment directed at both Satoko and her brother.

A pivotal event occurred around the time of the Watanagashi Festival in 1980. During a trip to Shirakawa Park with her parents, Satoko, suffering from advanced Hinamizawa Syndrome and consumed by paranoia, believed her parents intended to kill her. In what she perceived as self-defense, she pushed them off a viewing platform, resulting in their deaths. An alternate version suggests the railing gave way as she rushed to hug them after overhearing their loving intentions, making their deaths accidental.

Following her parents' deaths, Satoko was hospitalized at the Irie Clinic, where she was nearly vivisected as a research subject for Hinamizawa Syndrome. She was saved by Dr. Irie's development of an experimental treatment, C-103. Afterwards, she and Satoshi were taken in by their aunt and uncle, Teppei and Tamae Hōjō. During this time, Satoko suffered abuse and clung to her brother for protection. During a subsequent Watanagashi Festival, Satoshi murdered Tamae to protect Satoko and subsequently disappeared. Teppei fled the village, and Satoko began living with her friend, Rika Furude.

Despite her traumatic past, Satoko typically exhibits an energetic, playful, and mischievous personality. She is renowned for her distinctive "ohoho" laugh and her expertise in designing and setting intricate traps, which often target her friend Keiichi Maebara. She speaks in a polite but sometimes grammatically incorrect manner, attempting to sound refined. She is a sore loser and can be emotionally vulnerable, sometimes crying when teased. However, she is also highly analytical and intuitive, demonstrating remarkable strategic thinking, such as mapping out complex scenarios under pressure.

Her relationships are a core aspect of her character. She referred to her brother Satoshi as "Nii-Nii" and later applies the same term to Keiichi Maebara, whom she views as a brother figure. She also considers Shion Sonozaki an older sister figure, calling her "Nee-Nee." Her closest relationship is with Rika Furude, with whom she lives and shares a deep, complicated bond. This dependence on Rika becomes a critical point in her later development.

In the world of "Saikoroshi-hen," a fragment where no tragic events occurred, Satoko's character is significantly different. She lives in a stable family with her brother Satoshi and has a more cold and distant relationship with Rika, even bullying her. This version of Satoko speaks in formal Japanese and is less endearing towards her friends, primarily due to perceiving Rika as spoiled and self-centered.

In the narrative of "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gou" and "Sotsu," Satoko's character undergoes a profound and dark transformation. After surviving the events of 1983, she and Rika move on to middle school and later enroll in St. Lucia Academy. Satoko struggles immensely with the academic demands and formal social environment, feeling isolated and abandoned when Rika focuses on her new life. This rift leads to intense despair. Wandering Hinamizawa, she enters the Furude Shrine's storehouse and encounters a mysterious entity named Eua, who grants her the power to loop through fragments of time while retaining her memories.

Believing Rika broke a promise to stay together, Satoko uses this power in an attempt to force Rika to abandon her dreams and remain in Hinamizawa forever. She becomes the instigator of new loops, manipulating events and orchestrating tragic outcomes. This version of Satoko is portrayed as cruel, sadistic, ruthless, selfish, and calculating. She memorizes events across fragments, learns to use firearms, and shows no hesitation in causing death, including her own and Rika's, to reset the loops. A "witch" persona emerges, separate from her human self, which justifies her actions as meaningless within the loops and lacks remorse. In one fragment, she kills a reformed Teppei and even her own human self when it attempts to interfere, fully rejecting her emotional humanity.

As an adult, depicted in the "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei" manga set 35 years later, Satoko remains in Hinamizawa. She marries Kisaku, a grandson of Kimiyoshi Kiichirō, and together they own a souvenir and confectionery store called "Smile Store" (ukaoya). They have a daughter named Sakuko. Satoko is shown to use her daughter and another character named Tamaki for promotional materials and will scold her daughter for certain behaviors as the story progresses.

Satoko has short blonde hair often held back by a black headband, rose or magenta-colored eyes, and sharp canine teeth. Her typical school uniform is a light green sailor dress with a yellow scarf or bow. Casually, she wears a pink sleeveless shirt and denim shorts. After obtaining looping powers, her irises occasionally assume a bright red hue. She is also color-blind, unable to distinguish between broccoli and cauliflower, a trait she shares with her brother.

In "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kira," a non-canonical series of OVAs, she wears an Angel Mort outfit during a comedic fantasy sequence and participates in punishment games involving various outfits.
