Description
Hanyuu is a central figure in the world of Higurashi: When They Cry – GOU, known as the true identity behind the legendary guardian deity Oyashiro-sama. Her background is deeply rooted in the history of the village of Hinamizawa. Originally a human who lived centuries ago, she was sacrificed in a ritual known as the Watanagashi to atone for the sins of others, an event that transformed her into a divine, spiritual being. She is also an ancestor of the Furude shrine family, specifically to the character Rika Furude. In the context of GOU, it is revealed that Hanyuu exists as a part of a more powerful, higher-order entity named Eua, who refers to Hanyuu as her failure or a splintered off piece of herself.
Her physical appearance is that of a young girl, appearing to be around the same age as her friend Rika. She has long, light purple hair and violet eyes. The most distinctive feature is a pair of dark purple horns sprouting from her head, with the one on the left having a visible crack. She is most often seen in a traditional shrine maiden's outfit, which consists of a white kimono top and red hakama pants, although she is also capable of appearing in a school uniform or casual clothing when she manifests in a solid form.
Personality-wise, Hanyuu stands in stark contrast to the fearsome and vengeful image the villagers have of Oyashiro-sama. She is typically a timid, nervous, and pessimistic girl who is easily frightened or upset. A notable verbal tic is her habit of muttering "Hau au, auauau..." when she is happy, sad, or anxious. She frequently blames herself for problems and apologizes to others. Hanyuu deeply resents the history of violence and sacrifice that has been committed in her name as a god, often becoming distressed at the mention of curses or torture. Despite her usual shyness, she can display a more mature and authoritative voice, and her eyes glow red when she channels her divine powers or becomes angry.
Within the story, Hanyuu has a crucial role as a guardian and companion to Rika Furude. For centuries, she existed as an invisible, incorporeal spirit that no one could see or hear. This changed with the birth of Rika, who became the first person able to perceive her. The two share a deeply connected existence, and it is through Hanyuu's divine power that Rika is able to travel between parallel worlds, known as fragments, whenever she dies, giving her a chance to escape her tragic fate. In Higurashi: When They Cry – GOU, her role is significantly altered. The powers that enabled the time loops have diminished, and she ultimately fades away, leaving Rika to confront the new, unknown tragedies on her own. Before her departure, she leaves Rika a crucial clue in the form of a fragment, directing her toward the Onigari-no-ryuuou, a sword with the ability to permanently kill a looper. This act demonstrates that even in her weakened state, she is still trying to protect Rika by hinting at the existence of a new, unknown looper.
Her most important relationship is with Rika Furude, whom she has watched over since Rika's birth. Hanyuu regards Rika as her one and only true friend, acting as a motherly figure who taught her how to cook and other skills. Their senses are linked, meaning any physical sensation Rika experiences, such as pain or the spiciness of food, is also felt by Hanyuu. Rika sometimes teases her for this, such as by eating spicy food that Hanyuu dislikes. The departure of Hanyuu is a source of great despair for Rika, who breaks down in tears at being left to face the endless loops alone.
In terms of development, Hanyuu takes a back seat in GOU compared to her active role in the original story's conclusion. Her arc focuses on her dissolution and the implications of her absence. The series establishes a deeper connection to the broader When They Cry universe by introducing Eua as a superior original entity from whom Hanyuu was created, reframing her origins and her divine nature.
Hanyuu possesses several notable abilities befitting her status as a god. Her primary power is the ability to manipulate space and time to create parallel worlds, or fragments, allowing for the time loops that Rika experiences. She can travel with Rika to the Sea of Fragments, an interdimensional space where these fragments are viewed. She is typically invisible and intangible, following Rika everywhere, but can switch to a solid, visible human form at will. Other abilities include stopping time, teleportation, flight, and a form of mind control. In some circumstances, she can also manifest the Onigari-no-ryuuou sword and demonstrate remarkable skill with it.
