Description
Mitsuki Sarue is the human alias used by the archangel Sariel, a high-ranking angel from the world of Ente Isla. His primary mission is to enforce the ruling of the declaration of the Fallen, a divine judgment against those who have strayed from the Church's authority. He is sent to Earth specifically to retrieve the sacred sword Better Half from the hero Emilia, believing that her distance from the Church has stripped her of the right to wield it.
His first encounter with Emilia occurs when he attacks her at a convenience store, disguised as a masked robber. When that attempt fails, he adopts the identity of Mitsuki Sarue and inserts himself into her surroundings by becoming the manager of Sentucky Fried Chicken, a rival fast-food chain to MgRonald's where Sadao Maou works. This position allows him to observe both Maou and Emilia while blending into human society.
Sariel's personality is a blend of arrogance and eccentricity. As an angel, he carries a deep-seated belief in his own superiority over humans, demons, and even other angels, often speaking in a condescending and authoritative tone. He has a theatrical and dramatic manner, frequently overreacting when his plans go awry or when he feels slighted. This combative arrogance is offset by a childish and flamboyant side, which makes him unintentionally comedic despite his serious intentions. He develops a pronounced infatuation with Chiho Sasaki, repeatedly making inappropriate and unwelcome remarks about her appearance, which leads to violent reprimands from Emilia.
His motivation stems from a rigid interpretation of divine justice. He considers Emilia's continued possession of Better Half as an offense against the Church, and he initially views Maou as a demon who must be annihilated. To further his goals, he manipulates Suzuno Kamazuki, also known as Crestia Bell, into joining his cause by exploiting her loyalty to the Church. He frames their mission as a righteous purge, but his true objective is the recovery of the sacred sword.
In combat, Sariel wields a large scythe and possesses a unique ability called the Wicked Light of the Fallen, which can nullify all sacred powers. This makes him a particularly dangerous opponent for holy warriors like Emilia, who rely on divine energy. In his true angelic form, Sariel has silver-white hair, pale skin, and violet eyes. He wears a white robe tied with a rope at the waist and an olive branch wrapped around his forehead. His small angel wings expand in size when he is near the moon.
Despite his initial threat, Sariel is ultimately defeated and left powerless in Japan, stripped of the ability to return to Ente Isla. This defeat humbles him to some extent, and he becomes a more comedic presence in the story, forced to navigate human life without his former authority. His character development centers on his struggle to accept this new reality and his gradual shift from a zealous enforcer of divine will to a bumbling figure caught up in the everyday absurdities of the human world.
