Description
Gakuto Sōgetsu, known as Gavin Sogetsu in some English adaptations, is a central character in the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens. He is a sixth-grade student who holds the position of student council president at Goha 7th Elementary School. Physically, Gakuto is a lean boy with deep-blue eyes and purple hair that partially covers his eyes, often secured with two white hair clips on the left side. He typically wears a plain light-blue school uniform but is also seen in a blue kimono or a regal black and red cloak with yellow trim on formal occasions.
Gakuto is defined by his extremely serious and disciplined nature. He has maintained a perfect record of never being late or absent from school, a virtue he applies to all aspects of his life, including his dueling style. As the student council president, he is deeply beloved by his fellow students and handles a vast array of school duties on his own. He has a strong charisma and significant approval from the student body, once stepping down from the presidency after losing a duel only to be easily reinstated shortly after.
His primary motivation is to uphold order and enforce the rules of Goha, which often puts him at odds with his friends. He finds himself in a constant state of internal conflict, torn between his duty to enforce regulations and the genuine enjoyment he finds while spending time with his rule-breaking friends, particularly the series protagonist Yuga Ohdo. Gakuto is largely unable to decline requests from other students, often taking on too many tasks at once, from teaching math to filling in for sports teams, duties far outside the typical scope of a student council president.
Within the story, Gakuto serves as a direct contrast to Yuga’s free-spirited inventiveness. While he initially believes the current Master Duels are perfect as they are, his exposure to Rush Duels through his friends causes him to evolve. After experiencing the appeal of this new format, he develops his own dueling style, known as the New Sogetsu-ryū. He often becomes irritated and agitated when rules are broken, especially by Yuga, and will panic when his friends do something that violates Goha’s codes, sometimes begging for forgiveness preemptively.
Gakuto has key relationships with his fellow main characters. He is close friends with Yuga Ohdo and Luke, though he acts as the straight man to their antics. He also works closely with the student council vice president, Rayne Nanahoshi, and secretary, Rino Nanahoshi, who support him in his duties. In moments of high stress or panic, he is known to demonstrate a comical ability to walk incredibly fast while maintaining an upright posture.
In terms of dueling abilities, Gakuto is a skilled player who uses a specific strategy inherited from his family. His deck is a Stall Deck based around his ace monster, Fiendish Commander Yameruler, which prevents both players from Tribute Summoning high-Level monsters. This defensive strategy focuses on monsters with high DEF rather than high ATK. For offense, he relies on the spell card Shield & Sword, which swaps the ATK and DEF of all monsters, allowing him to use his formidable defenses for aggressive attacks. His dueling style is honorable; he once stepped down from his presidency simply because he lost a formal match. He is also quite athletic, easily dodging opponents on a rugby field while simultaneously answering questions from other students.
