Description
Kaede Akino is a 14-year-old magical girl from Shinsei Ward, Kamihama City. Her red hair reaches her shoulders, styled in twintails secured by flower-like scrunchies, complementing her orange eyes. Standing 150 cm tall, she wears her school uniform as a civilian. Her magical attire features a red-and-gold poncho, brown shorts, a witch's hat adorned with a red gem, and boots with red ribbons. She wields a wooden cane as her primary weapon.

Timidity and anxiety define her personality; she often describes herself as indecisive, cowardly, and prone to self-doubt. Despite this, she demonstrates deep kindness, fierce loyalty, and a willingness to confront danger for her teammates. She cherishes nature, nurturing a family vegetable garden and caring for multiple pets: a snake named Pero, a spider called Hachi, a dog named Don, and a cat named Gorojiro. Her hobbies include gardening and playing UFO catchers, though she struggles with the latter.

Her magical girl origin stems from a crisis where a planned 38-story apartment building threatened to block sunlight, destroying her family's garden and disrupting her pets. Desperate, she contracted with Kyubey, wishing the construction had never started. This wish halted the project but bound her to fight witches, plunging her into persistent fear.

Her combat abilities focus on environmental manipulation. She can temporarily delete obstacles, summon protective plant barriers, or entangle opponents with vines. Her signature Connect ability fuses her weapon with another magical girl's, amplifying their combined power and noted as one of the strongest such techniques. In her evolved Doppel form, Zola, she manifests a land-conquering entity that spreads corrosive moss to claim territory. While potent within its domain, Zola risks unintended environmental damage if summoned carelessly. Within *Magia Exedra*, her skills expand to healing allies, restoring MP, inflicting fog-based status effects, and accelerating her action sequence under heavy damage.

Kaede's primary relationships are with teammates Momoko Togame and Rena Minami. Initially, Rena viewed Kaede as a liability, leading to frequent arguments and reconciliations, often initiated by Kaede's apologies. Their bond strengthens into mutual trust; Rena acknowledges Kaede's caution as a strategic asset, while Kaede learns to rely on their support. Shared activities symbolize their connection: Rena gifted Kaede a glow stick to encourage her interest in idols, and they collaborate during beach outings or winter shopping trips.

Her development centers on overcoming self-perceived inadequacy. Early missions saw her freezing in combat, fearing friendly fire or errors that burdened Momoko and Rena. A turning point occurred during a solo mission at a farmer's market selling her family's produce, where she encountered a Familiar outbreak. Despite initial panic, she coordinated with magical girls Konomi Haruna and Kako Natsume and contacted allies for reinforcement, demonstrating growing initiative. This experience, coupled with Rena and Momoko's encouragement, helped her recognize her own courage and value.

In the anime adaptation, she briefly aligned with the Wings of Magius as a "black feather," reflecting her vulnerability to promises of safety. However, her core narrative emphasizes that her true strength emerges through camaraderie, rejecting the notion that magical girls must bear their burdens alone.
