Description
Chiaki Ōgaki is a Motosu High School student and co-founder of the Outdoor Activities Club, created with her friend Aoi Inuyama. Her passion for camping stems from cherished childhood family trips, where experiences like eating curry outdoors motivated her to establish the club for more frequent adventures.
She possesses fair skin, thigh-length bluish-purple hair often in twin side ponytails, and brown eyes. She consistently wears distinctive semi-rectangular wire-frame glasses, a habit since kindergarten. Her hairstyle evolves: initially short bangs grow longer by Season 2, shifting to a medium cut in later manga chapters and a long ponytail during her part-time work. She dons black leggings and reddish-brown boots under a large dark-blue coat for outdoor activities, and the standard female school uniform otherwise.
Friendly, bright, and playful, Chiaki serves as the group's energetic mood-maker. She exhibits impulsive tendencies and enjoys playful mischief, frequently initiating pranks with Aoi, often targeting Nadeshiko. Despite her enthusiasm, she has limited stamina, tiring quickly during physical exertion. She is intensely frugal, comically suffering nosebleeds when faced with expensive items, and actively seeks budget solutions for gear, sometimes repurposing scrap. Her decisive leadership occasionally borders on recklessness, leading to humorous mishaps like improperly seasoned food; she gradually learns from these errors.
Within the club, Chiaki initially rejects Nadeshiko's application due to limited room space but accepts upon learning four members qualify them for a larger room. She enthusiastically, yet unsuccessfully, tries recruiting Rin Shima and Ena Saitō, respecting Rin's solo preference and eventually forming a strong friendship. To fund club activities, she works part-time at the Minobu branch of Kawamoto Liquors, frequented by their advisor, Minami Toba. She uses nicknames for friends, calling Aoi "Inuko" and Aoi's younger sister "Chibi Inuko".
Approximately ten years after high school, depicted in the film, Chiaki works for Yamanashi Prefecture's tourism agency after a prior job in Kyoto. She spearheads regenerating a disused site in Takaori. During a Nagoya dinner, Rin suggests converting it into a campsite. An intoxicated Chiaki impulsively drags Rin there via taxi and drunk-texts invitations to Nadeshiko, Aoi, and Ena. Only Nadeshiko arrives initially, later hosting Chiaki and Rin for crab hotpot at her family home, where Aoi joins. After Ena later offers help, Chiaki assigns project roles.
During a trial camp, Ena's dog Chikuwa discovers ancient earthenware. Archaeological investigation confirms Jōmon-period artifacts, prompting the prefecture to cancel the campsite in favor of a historic designation. Undeterred, Chiaki collaborates with her friends to revise the proposal, integrating the site as an attraction. She presents their plan via promotional video at a prefectural conference, securing approval. The Fujikawa Matsubokkuri Camp Base opens October 2, with Chiaki attending. As an adult, she develops a fondness for alcoholic beverages, reminiscent of Minami Toba.
Chiaki is the only main character whose immediate family remains unseen across all media; her mother is mentioned but no family appears at the campsite opening. Her name "Chiaki" combines "thousand" (千) with "clear," "crystal," "bright," or "autumn" (秋/晶/明), while her surname Ōgaki means "big fence," referencing Ōgaki City in Gifu Prefecture. Her birthday is August 31.
