Description
Tatsuya Kuruma captains the B-rank squad Suzunari First. Despite hailing from a wealthy family that financially supports the organization and donated the Suzunari Branch building, he remains approachable and humble.
He is a light-skinned, slender young man of average height. Medium-length, wavy light brown hair frames his face, and his black eyes feature distinctive slit irises. He favors collared cardigans or sweaters over simple shirts. His standard Border uniform is a forest green shrug jacket with black stripes, a black shirt with green vertical lines, beige pants, and knee-high brown boots.
Kuruma radiates exceptional kindness, consideration, and a profound capacity for forgiveness, traits that naturally draw others to him. This was demonstrated when he immediately forgave teammate Taichi Betsuyaku for accidentally boiling all his tropical fish, despite his grief. His altruism is further shown when he cycled through rain to meet Tetsuji Arafune, aiming to alleviate Kō Murakami's concerns over Arafune's role change, consistently supporting those around him.
Initially timid in combat, he displayed visible anxiety during Aftokrator's large-scale invasion, requiring reassurance while his squad suppressed Trion Warriors. Designated as bait in a trap against the powerful Neighbor Lamvanein, he felt genuine terror, yet his coordination of Shields contributed to the enemy's defeat, earning his squad an Excellent Distinguished Service award. Observers noted a significant shift in his combat demeanor afterward, as he displayed increased steadiness in subsequent rank battles.
His tactical growth became evident during B-rank wars. Against Nasu Squad and Tamakoma Second, he demonstrated improved resolve, coordinating with Betsuyaku to engage Rei Nasu directly and persisting under heavy fire despite injuries. Left alone after his squad's defeat, he executed a last-ditch Hound attack that exploited her blind spot, eliminating her even as he bailed out.
As a leader and chief tactician, he workshops strategies with all members present. He possesses keen situational awareness and an ability to evaluate the larger conflict based on opponents' presumed goals. His quick thinking and timing have secured unexpected victories against superior opponents.
His kindness and consideration have earned him the complete loyalty of his teammates. In battle, his role is to support Kō Murakami from mid-range or by suppressing other Gunners. The two recently developed a new formation where Kuruma moves right behind Murakami and switches to a Full Attack stance while the Attacker defends him. This tactic's effectiveness in open areas has turned the tables on individually more powerful opponents like Masato Kageura and Hiro Kitazoe.
When separated from Murakami, he teams up with Taichi Betsuyaku to combine their firepower and defenses, restraining opponents to wait for an opening. Even fighting alongside the Sniper, he is outmatched by more skilled ranged fighters, though he can still secure critical injuries with well-timed attacks.
Kuruma's primary offensive Trigger is Asteroid, channeled through an assault rifle, granting a high rate of fire ideal for mid-range combat. His fighting style is conservative, almost always firing from behind a Shield. He recently added a second rifle to fire with both at once while Murakami protects him, switching between whittling down enemies with Asteroid and circumventing obstacles with Hound.
He is adept at using Hound to circumvent obstacles by firing upward and angling bullets to rain down on an opponent from above. He can restrain enemies with Asteroid to ensure they do not move. With two rifles, he can strike from the side while simultaneously weakening a Shield with Asteroid, or fire Hound through both rifles in different directions for a difficult-to-avoid pincer attack.
He is almost always seen firing from behind a Shield with one rifle, except when fighting alongside Betsuyaku. Then, they combine their Shields for full protection without thinning their defense. He has also cast Shields from afar to protect an ally, overlapping his Full Guard with those of other agents.
His recorded parameters are a Trion level of 6, Attack 5, Defense/Support 6, Mobility 5, Skill 7, Range 4, Command 6, and Special Tactics 3, for a total of 42 points.
Outside of combat, he enjoys aquaria and macaroni gratin, and favors tomato-flavored instant noodles, though he often yields them to Betsuyaku. He possesses notable luck, being one of the few unaffected by a certain squad member's fried rice.
