Description
Hailing from the parallel dimension called the Neighborhood, Yūma Kuga is a humanoid Neighbor. A near-fatal injury at age eleven forced the replacement of his biological body with a Trion construct, halting his physical development. Consequently, he stands at a permanent 141 cm with striking white hair and red eyes, though he was born with black hair. In everyday life, he favors casual clothing: a hoodie marked by a paw symbol and the word "UMA" — a playful nod to his name — paired with baggy jeans. When deploying his Trion battle body, distinct uniforms materialize: for C-Rank missions, an all-black suit with white and gray accents, a departure from the standard white trainee gear. Upon promotion to B-Rank, his uniform mirrors his squad leader's but with symmetrical sleeves lacking shoulder guards and bearing the Tamakoma Branch emblem. In his Black Trigger form, a sleek black jumpsuit fuses with his guardian, Replica.
The son of Border founder and former Commander-in-Chief Yūgo Kuga, Yūma was thrust into inter-dimensional warfare as a child. Defying his father's orders at eleven, he trailed him into combat and suffered fatal wounds. To save his son, Yūgo forfeited his life, transforming into a Black Trigger that encased Yūma's failing body within a ring and sustained it with Trion energy. This sacrifice passed Yūgo's Side Effect — lie detection — to Yūma. Replica, an artificial intelligence crafted by Yūgo, stepped in as Yūma's guardian and mentor. Driven by the hope of reviving his father, Yūma journeyed to Mikado City to tap into Border's resources, though he arrived with no clear plan beyond that objective.
Yūma blends logical pragmatism with a lack of familiarity with Japanese norms, sometimes sparking conflict. Underneath his typically relaxed exterior lies profound trauma from his father's sacrifice. He often invokes three battle tenets imparted by Yūgo: protect yourself without relying on others, every problem has multiple solutions, and parents are not infallible. Deception provokes him intensely, and he openly challenges liars with remarks such as, "You make up the stupidest lies." While his initial sole focus was restoring his father, joining Tamakoma-2 squad redirected his allegiance to his squad leader's goals. He takes particular satisfaction in non-lethal combat frameworks, appreciating the chance to battle formidable foes without deadly outcomes.
Serving as an Attacker, Yūma specializes in lightning-fast close combat, wielding the Trigger "Scorpion" as his main weapon. The Black Trigger inherited from his father amplifies his abilities and merges with Replica for real-time tactical assessment in fights. Renowned for his extraordinary reflexes and adaptive strategies, he gained aliases including "C-Rank White Devil," "White Nightmare," and eventually "Cougar." His Trion body eliminates the need for sleep. Replica served as his tactical mentor until the Aftokrator invasion inflicted critical damage, leading to their separation — yet Yūma clings to the hope of repairing him. At Border, he forged deep bonds with Tamakoma-2 squadmates Osamu Mikumo and Chika Amatori, frequently shielding them in battle. His link to branch chief Takumi Rindō traces back to Rindō's own training under Yūgo. After the Aftokrator battle, defensive heroics earned him a special commendation, complete with monetary rewards and Border points.
