Description
Taichi Betsuyaku is the Sniper of Suzunari First, a B-rank Border squad. He has a thin build, light skin, a round face, and prominent lower eyelashes. His medium-length, messy black hair is usually hidden under a brown deer-stalker hat with long ear flaps; he keeps this hat in his trion body to shield his eyes while sniping. His standard uniform consists of a forest green Border jacket with black stripes, a black shirt featuring vertical green lines, beige pants, and brown boots. Off-duty, he favors black sweaters, occasionally with simple images or dark horizontal stripes.

Taichi displays pronounced clumsiness and frequent tactlessness, often stemming from impulsive eagerness or earnestness. He readily apologizes for mishaps, reflecting his caring and well-intentioned nature. His expressiveness shows in cheerful enthusiasm and dismay after his own errors. An optimistic and excitable demeanor energizes teammates and leads to comedic interactions he seems to enjoy. However, he proves sensitive to criticism, as seen when his strategic proposal faltered early in Round 7, causing visible distress that shifted swiftly upon receiving indirect praise. His optimism can lapse into underestimating opponents or reckless actions on the battlefield, occasionally endangering him. He panics easily but calms quickly, especially with teammates, showing gradual improvement in composure over time. He demonstrates unconventional thinking and perceptiveness, exemplified by devising the light-switching mall strategy and detecting subtle changes in Rei Nasu’s bullet velocity.

Primarily a Sniper, Taichi adapts to mid-range combat alongside Captain Tatsuya Kuruma using Lightning for rapid fire. His standard Triggers are Egret for sniping, Ibis for penetrating defenses, Bagworm for radar invisibility, and Shield for defense—often combined with Kuruma's for full coverage. He temporarily used Escudo in Round 7 to protect a fuse box and himself. His Border parameters are Trion: 5, Attack: 6, Defense/Support: 4, Mobility: 5, Skill: 7, Range: 7, Command: 2, Special Tactics: 2, totaling 38. He once ranked 13th in stealth and target acquisition training, indicating concealment proficiency. His role prioritizes supporting the team ace, though he may act rashly when isolated.

Recruited from outside Mikado City roughly one year before Chika Amatori and Yūma Kuga joined Border, Taichi was selected for his youth, trion level, and energy. An accident where he boiled Kuruma's tropical fish halted aquarium installations at Suzunari Branch. Kuruma later gifted him his signature hat, likely to mitigate clumsiness. His pre-Border history is unspecified. Key operations include fighting the Aftokrator invasion’s initial Trion Soldiers and Rabbits, though Lamvanein forced his bailout during the Large-Scale Invasion; Suzunari First received an Excellent Distinguished Service award afterward. In B-Rank Wars, notable actions include:
- Missing a snipe at Nasu due to rain and nearly falling to her Viper before Kuruma intervened
- Pushing Kuruma away upon noticing Nasu’s slower Viper bullets, sacrificing himself to an explosion
- Conceiving and executing the light-switching strategy in Round 7 against multiple squads, using Escudo to shield a fuse box from Ema’s Ibis despite inferior trion
- Bailing out after Hyuse trapped him with Escudo during Round 7, initially crying over the plan’s partial failure before brightening at Jun Arashiyama’s praise of its unpredictability

His birthday is November 27. He prefers Neapolitan pasta, tomato-based foods, and diorama-making. The kanji for "Taichi" (太一) means "thick" and "one," while "Betsuyaku" (別役) means "different role." If he left Border, his memories would likely be sealed to prevent information leaks.
