Description
Haori is a tsukumogami, a spirit that was born from an old and well-loved haori, a traditional Japanese jacket. As such, she takes on the appearance of a woman wearing glasses. When dressing formally, she often wears the haori over a smart suit, a visual representation of her own origins as a piece of clothing. Among her group of tsukumogami, who originated from a set of wedding trousseau objects, Haori naturally acts as the responsible one, serving as a coordinator and mediator who helps keep everyone united. Her favorite alcoholic beverage is whiskey, a detail that hints at a preference for quiet, contemplative relaxation.

In terms of personality, Haori is almost always calm, composed, and serene, with a gentle smile on her face. She carries herself with a quiet grace and acts as a stabilizing presence within her household. However, this gentle exterior belies a fierce and absolute dedication to those she protects. Like the rest of her fellow trousseau tsukumogami, she shows no mercy whatsoever to any person or being who directly threatens Botan Nagatsuki, the young woman she is sworn to guard. This duality makes her a deeply reliable and formidable ally.

Haori’s primary motivation is the safety and happiness of Botan Nagatsuki. Her very existence as a tsukumogami from a wedding trousseau is tied to the purpose of finding a suitable match and protecting the bride. She is completely devoted to this mission and has spent years watching over Botan, acting as a guardian and, in many ways, a surrogate family member. Her role in the story is significant, as she is the one who initially brings the protagonist, Hyoma, into the Nagatsuki household under the direction of his grandfather. She serves as a key link between Hyoma and Botan’s world, observing his actions and slowly deciding whether he can be trusted.

Haori’s most important relationship is with Botan, whom she protects with unwavering resolve. She also has strong bonds with the other tsukumogami of the Nagatsuki household, serving as their de facto leader and the voice of reason. Her relationship with Hyoma evolves throughout the narrative. Initially, she is cautious, observing him as a potential threat and as a candidate to become Botan’s husband. Haori is the one who orchestrates a “date” with Hyoma, which is actually a mission to secretly observe Botan and reveal to him the truth about Botan’s unique and powerful nature as a vessel for a marebito spirit. Through this and other interactions, she becomes a key figure in helping Hyoma understand Botan’s situation and the world of tsukumogami. Her development is tied to her growing trust in Hyoma as she witnesses his change from a tsukumogami-hating exorcist to someone who can fight alongside them. She observes his struggles and notes his potential, hoping he will become a great support for Botan.

Regarding her abilities, Haori possesses the power to manipulate fabric at will. In combat, she primarily uses the haori she wears as both a weapon and a shield. She can extend, stretch, shrink, and control the cloth with great precision, using it to attack enemies from a distance, defend her allies, or restrain her opponents. This ability makes her a versatile fighter who can control the flow of a battle. She is often seen using this power directly to protect Botan from harm, demonstrating that her defensive capabilities are as strong as her offensive ones.
