Description
Kazuya Tokugawa is a second-year high school student at Japan's U-17 training camp. He has very dark blue hair, typically parted on the right to cover part of his left eye, and stands 189 cm tall with a slim build. His eyes appear brown in the manga and grayish blue in anime adaptations, usually maintaining a serious expression with rare smiles.
Born July 27 with blood type AB, his family includes grandparents, parents, and an older sister. His father works as a diplomat, leading Tokugawa to live abroad from age five—including in Paris—before joining the U-17 camp. He trained overseas aspiring to become a professional tennis player, winning a youth tournament in France. Despite this international experience, he showed limited awareness of prominent Japanese players like Atobe Keigo or Echizen Ryoma prior to the camp.
One year before the main events, Tokugawa suffered his first tennis defeat when Byoudouin Houou crushed him at the U-17 camp, inflicting severe injury and damaging his pride. This loss became his driving motivation for revenge. He clawed back from the "Loser" group and undertook specialized mountain training under the Drunken Coach. Tokugawa formed close bonds with Oni Juujiro and Irie Kanata, who trained him intensively to defeat Byoudouin. In return, he pledged to become the top player of the All-Japan Representatives.
Initially hyper-focused on defeating Byoudouin, Tokugawa rarely displayed emotion. He practices nightly aerobics and exhibits exceptional balance, such as performing fingerstands upside down. His disciplined routine includes early morning runs, strict self-care, and a protein-rich diet favoring traditional Japanese cuisine like natto. He avoids carbonated drinks and serves as student council president. Outside tennis, he enjoys snowboarding, yachting, watching dolphins, and reading yachting magazines, desiring a new snowboard and wetsuit.
When Echizen Ryoma arrived at the camp, Tokugawa recognized his potential and became his mentor. Their dynamic paralleled Ryoma’s earlier relationship with Tezuka Kunimitsu, evolving into a rivalry. Tokugawa overwhelmed Ryoma in their first match and directed him to train with the Drunken Coach. Later, he shielded Ryoma from Byoudouin’s destructive serve, sustaining injuries that affected his stamina. Tokugawa harbored a "big brother instinct" toward Ryoma—rooted in his desire for a younger sibling as an only child. This fondness shifted toward rivalry when Ryoma showed greater interest in Ryoga Echizen.
As the strongest second-stringer in Court 1, Tokugawa rallies with five or ten tennis balls simultaneously. He plays left-handed with an all-rounder style and exceptional ball control, utilizing techniques like Premonition, Howling, and Sechster Sinn. During his Genius 10 Challenge rematch against Byoudouin, he unveiled Divine Path of Asura and Black Hole. Black Hole demands extreme conditioning and can only sustain 30 minutes due to severe side effects, including internal damage and reduced lifespan. Despite coughing blood and collapsing in defeat, his performance earned Byoudouin’s acknowledgment and promotion to Japan’s No. 4 representative.
In the Pre-World Cup Exhibition Match against Germany, Tokugawa partnered with Yukimura Seiichi. He struggled against professional-level shots but used Black Hole to protect Yukimura when Yukimura lost his senses, nearly exceeding the technique’s time limit. Their collaboration unlocked the doubles technique Howling. Tokugawa later succeeded in a camp "pick-up contest," unmatched by any other high schooler.
He carries laundry detergent to wash clothes for himself and others, a habit noted by Irie Kanata. He maintains correspondence with people met during social tasks, including a pushy girl who frequently emails him—he replies to every message.
