Description
Captain is a character who appears in the original The Super Dimension Century Orguss television series. He is a Mu combat robot, a being from an alternate dimension, who is discovered by the character Mohm in the ninth episode. At the time of this discovery, his electronic brain had suffered significant damage during a battle, leaving him in need of repair. Mohm’s request to fix him is granted, and Captain subsequently joins the crew of the Glomar.

As a robot designed for warfare, Captain possesses formidable internal weaponry. He can deploy devastating missile launchers from behind chest plates that open to reveal them, and a visor above his eyes will slide down to cover them when he enters combat mode. He is also proficient with a variety of handheld weapons, making him a powerful asset in direct confrontation.

Throughout his time with the Glomar’s crew, Captain’s personality is defined by a central internal conflict. While he assists the crew, he is initially reluctant to fight against his own people, the Mu. This divided loyalty causes him significant distress, culminating in a mental breakdown in the twenty-fourth episode. It is at this point that Mohm intervenes and repairs his programming, effectively altering his core directives. After this event, he no longer struggles to fight against the Mu or any other enemy that threatens his newfound friends, indicating a strong sense of loyalty to the crew that has become his surrogate family.

Despite this reprogramming, his sense of isolation persists. In the thirtieth episode, feeling very alone aboard the Glomar, he decides to leave and join the Mu nation. However, once among them, he becomes disgusted by their fanatical devotion to destroying all organic life, as well as robots that resemble humans. This experience clarifies his own values and loyalties, leading him to sabotage the Mu’s warp system, a critical tool that allows them to launch surprise attacks. He then chooses to rejoin the Glomar, having fully rejected his original people’s destructive ideology.

Captain’s developmental arc concludes with a heroic sacrifice. In the final episode, he holds off the attacking Mu forces single-handedly to allow his comrades the time they need to reach the base of the orbital elevator. It appears he is destroyed in the fighting, giving his life for the friends he ultimately chose to protect. The Orguss 02 original video animation (OAV) series reveals that he did not die but was instead transported to another world when the Earth was restored, where he continues his existence.
