Description
Carla Vargas is a character from the Kingdom of Elfrieden, known for her fiery red hair, golden eyes, and her heritage as a dragonewt, which grants her draconic traits such as horns, wings, and a tail. She is the daughter of Castor Vargas, a powerful duke, and the granddaughter of Excel Walter, placing her within a prominent military lineage. Her early life was defined by her status as a close friend and training companion of Princess Liscia Elfrieden at the Royal Officer's Academy, and she formally held the position of second-in-command of the Vargas Duchy Air Force.
Inheriting her father's stubbornness and immense pride, Carla is a headstrong individual who is accustomed to charging into battle without pause. Before the series' events, she was considered very attractive but steadfastly refused all suitors, declaring she would never marry a man weaker than herself. When the hero Kazuya Souma is unexpectedly made king, Carla and her father believe he has usurped the throne and forced Liscia into an unwanted engagement. Driven by loyalty to her father and a desire to protect her friend from what she sees as a political farce, Carla joins Castor's rebellion against the new king during the conflict known as the One Week War.
Her impulsive nature leads her to lead a charge against a decoy, leaving her father vulnerable to capture. After their defeat at Red Dragon Castle, both she and Castor are taken prisoner and fitted with slave collars. Facing the death penalty for treason, Carla's life is spared when King Souma instead sentences her to become a royal maid, serving directly under him and Liscia. As a slave, she is forced into servitude, but Souma also entrusts her with a secret, critical mission: she is ordered to kill him if he ever becomes a tyrant. This assignment, which she reluctantly accepts out of trust for Liscia’s judgment, gives her role as a servant a unique and dangerous purpose.
Initially, Carla chafes at her humiliation, clashing with the head maid Serina and struggling to accept her new duties. Over time, however, she begins to recognize Souma’s competence and adapts to her role. She becomes Liscia’s primary personal attendant, supports her through her pregnancy, and evolves into a dedicated caretaker for the royal twins, Cian and Kazuha, becoming the first person they address verbally. Her development also includes forced participation in public duties, such as the "Jewel Voice Broadcast," where she is embarrassingly forced into the flamboyant persona of "Miss Dran" in a revealing costume.
As a dragonewt, Carla possesses formidable combat abilities inherited from true dragons, including enhanced strength, stamina, durability, the power of flight, and fire breath. She is also a skilled swordswoman, a capable leader, and a trained wyvern rider. Despite these strengths, she has notable weaknesses, including a vulnerability to cold temperatures and a deep, ingrained fear of the head maid Serina. Her journey traces an arc from a proud, rebellious soldier to a conflicted but loyal servant, balancing lingering resentment with a growing dutiful loyalty to the royal family she is sworn to both serve and, if necessary, destroy.
