TV-Series
Description
Tatsuya Shiba is the eldest son of the Yotsuba, one of Japan's Ten Master Clans governing magicians. Born to Shiba Tatsurou and Shiba Miya, he is eleven months older than his sister Miyuki. His birth stemmed from Yotsuba efforts to create a protector after the "Nightmare of 2062" devastated the clan. Initial celebration over his unique magical abilities turned to fear, prompting some branch families to advocate for his elimination. This was prevented by then-head Yotsuba Eisaku, who trained him instead as a combat magician and living weapon for the clan.
A magical experiment at age six fundamentally shaped him. Conducted by his mother Miya and aunt Maya, it forcibly altered his brain's limbic system to install an artificial Magic Calculation Area. This enabled systematic magic use but erased his capacity for strong emotions—fear, hatred, lust, and love—except toward Miyuki. The procedure also cemented his role as her Guardian, a position of high responsibility despite his lack of recognition as a full clan member. His magical capabilities are highly specialized and imbalanced: innate abilities like Decomposition (matter disintegration), Regrowth (time-reversal healing), and Elemental Sight (eidetic perception of information bodies) dominate his Magic Calculation Area, preventing conventional spellcasting. He compensates through theoretical mastery, Flash Cast (instant invocation without CADs), and combat techniques learned from master Kokonoe Yakumo.
Enrolling at First High School in 2095, he was placed in Course 2 ("Weeds") due to poor practical exam performance, contrasting with Miyuki's top-tier Course 1 ("Blooms") status. Academically, he excels in written exams and magic theory, ranking first nationally. His engineering prowess is extraordinary; operating under the pseudonym "Taurus Silver," he revolutionizes CAD technology through Four Leaves Technology, his family's company. He maintains a private lab in his Tokyo residence for fusion reactor research and CAD development. Socially perceived as stoic and inept, he forms friendships with classmates Erika Chiba, Leonhard Saijo, Mikihiko Yoshida, and Mizuki Shibata. His unwavering protection of Miyuki often labels him a "siscon," though he exhibits subtle care for allies, such as supporting Mikihiko's regained confidence or feeling guilt over Leo Saijo's injuries during conflicts.
During the Visitor Arc, his military role in the 101st Independent Magic-Equipped Battalion intersects with school life. He investigates parasitic entities ("vampires") deserting the USNA military unit "Stars," bringing him into conflict with Angie Sirius (Lina), Stars' commander dispatched to Japan. After unmasking her Parade illusion during a skirmish, he brokers a duel agreement: Miyuki faces Lina, while he ensures fairness and intervenes to prevent mutual annihilation when their strategic-class magics collide. His actions reveal broader conspiracies, including Section 3 (a counterintelligence group tied to the Saegusa clan) capturing parasites. He discreetly implants a tracker on one parasite, distributing the data to allies including Juumonji Katsuto and Saegusa Mayumi, while warning the Saegusa about the risks of uncontrolled parasite research.
A pivotal development involves the autonomous robot Pixie, malfunctioning due to a parasite influenced by Honoka Mitsui's subconscious feelings for him. The parasite awakens with a core directive to serve him, expressing Honoka's desires: "I want to be useful to you" and "I want to be yours." Tatsuya subdues its psychic capabilities through commands, later identifying it as akin to a tsukumogami (tool spirit). USNA Colonel Balance escalates hostilities by ordering Lina to capture or kill Tatsuya, suspecting him of the "Scorched Halloween" strategic-class magic incident. Using the experimental weapon Brionac, Lina severs his arm in combat. He disables it via CAD insertion and Regrowth, incapacitating her while criticizing her military obedience. He later reports the attack to Yotsuba butler Hayama, revealing Saegusa-linked surveillance.
His demeanor remains analytical and reserved, prioritizing Miyuki's safety above all. He acknowledges others' beauty—including Miyuki, Honoka, and Mayumi—without emotional or romantic response. Behind his perceived emotional deficit lies a commitment to reshape the world for Miyuki's future, driving his actions across magical and military conflicts.
