Takumi Fujiwara works part-time at a Gunma Prefecture gas station while attending high school. Standing 174 cm tall and weighing 58 kg, he favors springtime, his Toyota Sprinter Trueno AE86 (nicknamed the Eight-Six), and naps. He avoids arrogant individuals, losing, and party-focused girls.
Unknown to others, Takumi honed exceptional driving skills delivering tofu for his father Bunta Fujiwara since age 13. This pre-dawn routine on Mount Akina's hazardous roads refined his cornering speed through methods like gutter-riding in drainage channels. His innate talent involves mentally mapping ideal racing trajectories and executing drift-free turns.
His racing journey starts accidentally when he outdrives Akagi RedSuns member Keisuke Takahashi during a delivery, earning the moniker "White Ghost of Akina." Despite initial disinterest, he faces subsequent challenges due to paternal pressure or peer influence. Early victories include overcoming Myogi NightKids leader Takeshi Nakazato's Nissan Skyline GT-R by leveraging Bunta's suspension tweaks, and countering Shingo Shoji's "Duct Tape Death Match" aggression with adaptable driving.
Romantic involvement with Natsuki Mogi faces strain from her affair with a salaryman. They reconcile in their final high school year, exchange confessions of love, and part ways after graduation when she relocates to Tokyo for studies. Later, Takumi marries Mika Uehara, united by mutual professional aspirations.
Bunta Fujiwara crucially shapes Takumi's growth, covertly upgrading the Eight-Six to test his son. Post-engine failure, Bunta fits a competition engine and transfers the car's ownership to Takumi. He further challenges Takumi by defeating him downhill in a Subaru Impreza WRX STI, then mandating its use for deliveries to master rear-wheel-drive dynamics.
Takumi becomes the downhill specialist for elite team Project D, founded by Ryosuke Takahashi, cementing his pro-racing dedication. Here, he devises techniques like the "Blind Attack" pass and enters intense concentration states called the "Fujiwara Zone." His final Project D race against Shinji Inui concludes with the Eight-Six's engine seizing mid-competition; he still wins by coasting backward across the finish.
After Project D disbands, Takumi retires the Eight-Six from racing and returns to tofu deliveries in Bunta's Subaru. He shifts to rally driving, ultimately attaining world championship status as depicted in the sequel *MF Ghost*.
