Description
Chloé, known as Koharu in the original Japanese version, is a main character in the Pokémon anime series who resides in Vermilion City in the Kanto region. She is the daughter of Professor Cerise, a renowned Pokémon researcher, and her mother Talia, and is the older sister of her younger brother, Parker. Chloé is a childhood friend of Goh, having first met him when they were six years old at Professor Oak’s Pokémon Summer Camp. Physically, Chloé is depicted as a short and slender girl with fair skin and maroon hair that she typically keeps in a side ponytail with a cherry blossom-shaped clip. Her eyes are an asparagus-green color, and her everyday attire primarily consists of her school uniform.

At the beginning of the series, Chloé presents a detached and aloof exterior, often coming across as indifferent or easily exasperated. She dislikes when people make assumptions about her, particularly the expectation that she will follow in her father's footsteps to become a Pokémon researcher. This pressure is a source of frustration for her, leading her to maintain a distance from the world of Pokémon training, despite being surrounded by Pokémon due to her father's profession. Her early personality includes a noticeable reluctance to engage with Pokémon, a stance that contrasts sharply with the enthusiastic attitudes of the main protagonists, Ash Ketchum and Goh. A significant part of her backstory involves her family's loyal Yamper. As a child, Chloé was jealous of the attention her parents gave the newly arrived Yamper, fearing it would replace her, and would tell it to go away. When Yamper ran away, a guilt-ridden young Chloé went out to find it and was attacked by wild Venonat. Yamper returned to defend her, an event that solidified their bond and explains Yamper's persistent affection for her in the present.

Chloé's central arc revolves around her journey of self-discovery, as she begins without a clear goal or dream of her own. Her role in the story often serves as a grounded, and sometimes reluctant, presence in contrast to the passionate and adventurous Ash and Goh, who work as research fellows for her father. A pivotal turning point for Chloé occurs when she encounters a wild Eevee that, unlike most of its species, appears unable or unwilling to evolve. Seeing a reflection of her own indecisiveness in the Pokémon, Chloé forms a powerful bond with it and ultimately becomes its Trainer. This event marks a significant shift in her character, as she becomes more adventurous, cheerful, and relaxed, actively stepping into the role of a Pokémon Trainer. Her journey with Eevee becomes a parallel quest for self-understanding, exploring various possible evolutions and paths while learning that it is acceptable not to have a predetermined future.

Key relationships heavily influence her development. Her friendship with Goh is longstanding and complex; she often finds his obsessions irritating and scolds him, but a deep, unspoken care exists between them. Her relationship with Ash, and his spontaneous passion for Pokémon, helps her step out of her comfort zone. Chloé's intelligence and responsible nature are notable abilities, evident in her dedication to her schoolwork. She is also capable of effectively commanding her Yamper in battle, using moves such as Spark, and as she grows, she becomes more knowledgeable and confident as a Trainer. Her primary strengths lie in her empathy, level-headedness, and the authentic care she shows for her friends and Pokémon, which proves to be invaluable in her personal growth.
