Description
Haruka Soukawa is a character from the Cardfight!! Vanguard overDress anime series. She is a young woman who serves as the deputy head of the team known as Daybreak and works directly as the primary caretaker, attendant, and assistant to the blind leader of the team, Mirei Minae. Her name combines the kanji for all and river or stream. She stands approximately 175 centimeters or five feet nine inches tall.
In her role as Mirei's assistant, Haruka is highly capable and executes a wide range of duties, from responding to inquiries from other servants and handling administrative tasks to dressing Mirei and managing her daily schedule. She is deeply devoted to Mirei to an extreme degree and has a significant role in creating the strict rules that govern Team Daybreak. Haruka was responsible for enforcing a lie upon Mirei that her older brother was dead, when in reality he was alive and operating under a different identity. This act, along with her other methods, contributed to isolating Mirei from the outside world and manipulating her. Haruka’s devotion, therefore, is complicated, as she views her actions as being entirely for Mirei’s sake, even when they involve deception and control.
Motivated by a desire to protect Daybreak and serve Mirei’s wishes, Haruka’s actions often put her in direct conflict with others, most notably Danji Momoyama. When Danji appears wanting to speak with Mirei, Haruka challenges him to a fight and pushes him to the brink of defeat before losing. After this defeat, she reveals the truth about Mirei’s brother and requests that Danji keep his identity a secret while acting as Mirei’s bodyguard. Throughout the story, Haruka has several key relationships that drive her character. Her primary relationship is with Mirei, whom she serves with unwavering loyalty but also manipulates for what she believes is Mirei’s own good. Her relationship with Danji is initially antagonistic, as she views him as an outsider and a potential threat, though she comes to rely on him in a complex arrangement. Haruka also has a notable rivalry with Megumi Okura, whom she fights and becomes deeply agitated with when Megumi continues to talk during their match.
Haruka’s character undergoes a notable development as the series progresses. Initially, she is presented as a composed and fiercely loyal secretary who always acts in Mirei’s best interest. However, it becomes apparent that her methods are manipulative and that she has been brainwashing Mirei to be distrustful of the outside world. After suffering defeats and witnessing Mirei’s strength, Haruka’s conviction wavers. She ultimately joins an organization called the Uniformers, believing that her own weakness is what caused Mirei pain and that she needs to become stronger. This decision stems from her insecurity and a desire to be more useful to Mirei. However, after fighting Mirei again and losing, she acknowledges that her true desire was always to be by Mirei’s side, and she returns to Team Daybreak.
In terms of notable abilities, Haruka is a skilled cardfighter who uses a Brandt Gate deck that focuses on a Meteorite Orders strategy. Her avatar card is Gravidia Nordlinger, and her deck includes units such as Gravidia Ange, Gravidia Nove, and Gravidia Sexta, along with orders like Meteorite Shower. This strategy revolves around accumulating Meteorite markers, which can be used to retire opponent rear-guards or gain various resources based on the number of meteorites on the field. Her battle record is marked by key defeats against major characters such as Danji Momoyama, Mirei Minae, Megumi Okura, Michiru Hazama, and Zakusa Ishigame, with her only recorded victory in the overDress season being against a character named Yamamoto. Despite her losing record, her matches are often intense, and she is depicted as a formidable opponent who can push powerful fighters like Danji to their limits.
