Description
Yu-yu Kondo is a third-year middle school student from Kanazawa city, Kaga Province. He began as intensely timid, unable to refuse requests, which frequently drew him into his older sisters' activities. This included being forced into public crossdressing, resulting in him gaining attention for his appearance in feminine attire despite his discomfort. Overwhelmed, Yu-yu ran away from home and met Megumi Okura. She brought him to the abandoned amusement park "Wonder Hill," where he encountered Team Blackout and the card game Vanguard for the first time.

Yu-yu possesses the ability to perceive others' emotions and inner states. This heightened sensitivity initially fueled social anxiety and difficulty asserting himself. Joining Team Blackout and playing Vanguard gradually fostered greater self-assurance and willingness to express his feelings. Early signs of emerging courage included attempts to protect Megumi from harassment and desperately defending Team Blackout's banner against Tohya Ebata. His empathic ability became key to resolving conflicts, notably allowing him to penetrate Mirei Minae's emotional barriers and address her distress during a critical cardfight at Nagoya Castle. As Danji Momoyama stepped back and Tohya departed, Yu-yu assumed leadership of Team Blackout, marking significant growth from his earlier passivity. He later voluntarily passed the leadership role to Megumi Okura.

His journey involved continuous challenges. While leading Team Blackout, he confronted the antagonistic group Uniformers, developing a self-righteous determination to defeat them and "save" their member Shirogane (later revealed as Zakusa). This mindset led to arrogance, culminating in a cardfight loss against Shirogane that forced Yu-yu to recognize his own hypocrisy and negative transformation. Following this, he achieved victory over the entity Gui, reaching a mutual understanding. Subsequently, he departed Team Blackout and Wonder Hill to embark on a journey aimed at witnessing unseen aspects of the world, concluding his primary narrative arc.

Yu-yu utilizes Dragon Empire decks in Vanguard, centered on his signature Grade 0 unit, Trickstar. His initial deck employed the "overDress" mechanic, allowing Trickstar to transform into various Vairina unit forms, supported by his first vanguard, Chakrabarthi Divine Dragon, Nirvana, which retrieved Trickstar from the drop zone. He later adopted a deck focused on the "X-overDress" mechanic, enabling Trickstar to combine with Prayer Dragon units into enhanced forms, commanded by Chakrabarthi Phoenix Dragon, Nirvana Jheva. He seemingly discarded his older overDress units for X-overDress, only to strategically reintegrate them during a crucial rematch against Raika Koshiba, symbolizing his belief in embracing one's past while progressing forward. He subsequently utilized decks supporting both mechanics simultaneously.

Physically, Yu-yu has short dark blue hair, fair skin, and purple eyes. His typical attire consisted of a green and white jacket, black jeans, and brown boots. During crossdressing, he wore feminine clothing like wigs, dresses, or a Raika Academy female student uniform. Later, his signature jacket changed to a cropped, unzipped red and black design worn over a white shirt, paired with black jeans and red boots. His final design incorporated more androgynous elements, featuring a long ponytail and a red cloth resembling a half-skirt.

Yu-yu's story is framed by his arrival at Wonder Hill and his eventual departure from it. He shares thematic connections with several characters, noted for a physical resemblance to Ruka Miyako (Team Blackout's original founder), inheriting the Nirvana card previously used by Mirei, and encountering entities like Gui linked to individuals sharing similarities with him. His actions ultimately facilitated renewed connections between Earth and Planet Cray.
