Description
Delia is a grey shrine maiden at the temple in the duchy of Ehrenfest, a girl with deep crimson hair and light blue eyes. Her appearance is noted to be striking; while not described as cute, she is considered beautiful in a manner reminiscent of a sophisticated adult, and she eventually grows into a remarkable beauty.

Her background is rooted in the grim realities of the temple. Delia was raised within its orphanage, a place of severe neglect and deprivation. The circumstances of her early life were harsh, with the withdrawal of blue priests and older grey shrine maidens leaving the youngest orphans on the verge of starvation. When she was seven, Delia was selected from a group of children to become an apprentice attendant. She quickly grasped that her survival and chance to escape the squalor of the orphanage depended entirely on her pretty face, which led her to resolve to one day become the mistress of a blue priest, a goal she saw as her only viable path to security.

This ambition heavily shapes her early personality. Due to being raised entirely within the temple's corrupt environment, Delia is strikingly naive about the wider world and views the exploitative practices of the High Bishop as normal. She is often straightforward, childishly blunt, and can be rude, particularly toward Myne, the new blue robe she is assigned to serve. Initially, she does not take her duties seriously and is an overt operative, openly serving as a spy for the High Bishop, reporting on Myne's activities. Despite her prickly and self-serving attitude, she is not without a good heart, and she frequently turns a blind eye to Myne's efforts to improve the orphanage and the temple.

Delia's primary motivation evolves significantly throughout the story. Her initial drive is purely self-preservation and the desire to secure a comfortable life as a concubine. However, a profound change occurs when the orphanage takes in a sickly baby boy named Dirk. Myne puts Dirk in Delia's care, and Delia develops a deep and genuine love for him, seeing him as a younger brother. This newfound familial bond becomes her central motivation, and she becomes his devoted caregiver, making decisions she believes will protect him, even if they are misguided. Her earlier ambition to be a mistress fades as her love for family takes precedence.

In the broader narrative, Delia serves several key roles. Initially, she is a source of conflict and mistrust within Myne's new household, representing the High Bishop's surveillance and the temple's corruption. Her actions as a spy eventually lead to a major crisis where her trust in the High Bishop results in a dangerous situation that nearly leads to Myne's enslavement. Following this incident, the High Bishop is arrested, and as his attendant, Delia faces execution. Myne intervenes to save her, and as punishment, Delia is dismissed from her service and reassigned to help manage the orphanage, a place she had desperately wanted to escape. In this new role, she continues to serve as a caregiver for Dirk.

Her key relationships are central to her development. Her relationship with Myne, or Rozemyne as she is later known, is complex. It begins with hostility and betrayal but transforms into sincere gratitude after Myne saves her life and continues to show her kindness. She grows to respect and worry for Myne, even after leaving her service. Her relationship with the High Bishop, Bezewanst, is one of manipulation; he is her savior from the orphanage, and she is initially loyal to him, unable to see his exploitation. Her bond with her adoptive brother, Dirk, becomes the most defining relationship of her life, softening her and giving her purpose. She also interacts with Myne's other attendants, like Fran, who distrusts her, and later, Gil.

Delia's development is a significant arc. She starts as a selfish, rude, and duplicitous girl whose only goal is personal gain. After her grave mistakes lead to disaster and she experiences Myne's mercy, she undergoes a noticeable maturation, becoming calmer, more mature, and genuinely grateful. She reflects on her past with regret, at one point tearfully asking Myne why she could not have been saved from the suffering of the orphanage sooner, acknowledging the pain of her own past even while celebrating the improvements for future children. She transforms from a spy into a loyal, if not directly serving, supporter of Myne and a devoted foster sister to Dirk.

Regarding notable abilities, Delia does not possess any magical powers or unique skills beyond those expected of a trained attendant. She is capable of performing household chores such as cleaning, laundering, and preparing baths. Her most significant ability shown in the story is her deep capacity for care and devotion, which she eventually channels into looking after Dirk and, later, helping to manage the orphanage.
