Description
Akina Myodo is the central protagonist, a high school student and owner of the Fated One of Miracles, Rezael. His surname uses kanji meaning "clear" and "guidance." He has predominantly dark blue short hair with a distinctive forehead streak transitioning from red at the bottom to white at the top. His typical outfit includes a long-sleeved shirt featuring reversed red and white striped patterns on each side over a black undershirt, grey pants, and red shoes with white soles and a stripe.

As the primary caregiver for his younger sister Hikari, who suffers from a chronic lung condition due to their father's demanding work schedule, Akina shoulders significant responsibility. He feels deep guilt, believing her illness stems from severe altitude sickness during a mountain camping trip under his supervision that left her hospitalized with deteriorating health. Akina frequently visits Hikari, striving to maintain her morale, even fabricating assurances about their father's visits. His protective nature extends to others; he assists classmate Suo Yobitsugi during a rainstorm and helps manage Suo's household neglect, learning about Suo's traumatic past involving his parents' death in a train accident.

Akina's journey into Vanguard begins when the mysterious entity Gabwelius selects him for the Fated Clash tournament, which grants the victor a fulfilled wish. Motivated solely by the desire to cure Hikari, Akina seeks guidance from his senior coworker and competitive player Nao Inabe. Training under her tutelage at Megumi Okura's card shop, he rapidly learns the game, constructs a Keter Sanctuary deck centered around Rezael, and enters the tournament. As a novice facing experienced opponents, his victories rely on relentless determination and strategic adaptations, like abandoning defensive options for an all-out offensive approach against professional fighter Taizo Kiyokura.

As a Fated One owner, Gabwelius grants Akina temporary immortality, preventing harm until the tournament wish is fulfilled—though this protection failed in an alternate timeline where Suo’s wish for "nothing" resulted in Akina’s death. He also wields Design Force, enabling him to manifest miracles during cardfights and resist supernatural interference like Sybilt’s Spirit Corruption.

A pivotal development occurs when an older Hikari from a future timeline reveals Akina’s original fate: losing the Fated Clash finals to Suo triggers a catastrophic explosion killing all participants, including Akina. Despite her pleas to abandon the tournament and ensure his survival, Akina refuses, driven by unwavering belief in defying destiny. He defeats Future Hikari in a cardfight to proceed, receiving the modified unit Liael-Amorta, engineered specifically to counter Suo’s Fated One of Zero, Blangdmire. In their climactic battle, Akina utilizes Liael-Amorta to survive Suo’s previously fatal assault, demonstrating that hope exists beyond Suo’s nihilistic concept of "Zero." His victory cures Hikari through the Design Force and helps Suo begin emotional healing.

Following the Fated Clash, Akina adjusts to ordinary life with a recovered Hikari and Suo, who insists on daily cardfights. In the DELUXE Arc, an invitation to a tournament determining Vanguard’s strongest fighter interrupts his peaceful routine. Prompted by elite fighter Kagetsu Yakumo, Akina confronts the question of his personal motivations for continuing Vanguard beyond securing Hikari’s health. This leads him to pursue becoming a professional fighter, actively competing in DELUXE to achieve that goal. His development shifts from externally driven purposes to internal aspirations, forming new connections like with transfer student Kuon Aikawa.

His character catchphrase, "Even though it’s just a glimmer of hope, a miracle will descend upon those who reach out their hand," underscores his enduring optimism. This phrase, originally spoken by Nao during Hikari’s mountain accident, becomes emblematic of his resolve. Additional traits include a habit of nutritious meal planning, evidenced during a school festival cooking bet with Hikari. Relationships evolve throughout his journey, notably with Suo transitioning from a fatal rival to a close friend and Mikoto Saito addressing him as "Akina-senpai."

Akina’s history intersects with other Fated Ones at a childhood summer camp hosted by the Kiyokura Group, memories obscured until later events. His actions during the Fated Clash inadvertently resolve a deeper conflict: his wish eradicates the alternate-timeline Sybilt, who was parasitically draining Hikari’s life force. In DELUXE, he continues navigating new challenges, maintaining bonds with allies while seeking his own path in the world of Vanguard.
