Description
Meinya is a small, unique creature from the anime Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul, given as a pet to the character Prushka. It was a present from Prushka's adoptive father, Bondrewd, on her tenth birthday, intended to be a companion for her. The creature's full species name is Meinastilim, which translates to Child of Change, but young Prushka could not pronounce this, leading to the shorter, affectionate name Meinya.
In appearance, Meinya is roughly the size of a rabbit, with an oval-shaped body, stubby legs, and large, feathered ears that enable it to fly for short distances. Its face has a somewhat toad-like quality, with horizontally slit pupils that stretch across the entire diameter of its eyes. The creature is vocal, known for making a distinctive myaah sound.
Meinya has a gentle and affectionate personality, forming a very deep and caring bond with its owner, Prushka. This attachment is powerfully demonstrated during a tragic event when Meinya desperately licks up the contents spilling from Prushka's cartridge and wails in despair, recognizing its beloved companion. Beyond its loyalty to Prushka, Meinya appears to have a friendly disposition and is accepted as part of the main group, joining Riko, Reg, and Nanachi on their continued adventure into the Abyss after the events at Ido Front.
The creature possesses several notable abilities that are highly valuable to delvers. Its fur gives off a specific scent that, when sniffed by a human, allows them to temporarily perceive the Force Field of the Abyss, a phenomenon the characters call fuzzy stuff. This ability helps to navigate the Abyss and mitigates some of the effects of the Curse, making ascension less punishing. Additionally, Meinya has a remarkably durable body with pliant, flexible bones. In one instance, after a curious Narehate injured it, its eye was pushed out of its socket and its intestines were forced out of its body, but it was able to be returned to normal with relative ease, demonstrating an extreme tolerance for physical stress.
Throughout the story, Meinya serves as a key to understanding Prushka's past and emotional state. It was instrumental in helping Prushka recover from a severe psychological breakdown caused by the Curse of the Abyss after she first came to Ido Front. The creature's very existence is tied to the mysteries of the Abyss, as its origins are suggested to be unnatural; the White Whistle Srajo speculates that Meinya may be a byproduct of Bondrewd's experiments to create artificial beast-like beings called Juusou. This implies that while its foundational structure is not human, it was likely born from a mysterious mixing or experiment involving animal fetuses. Following the loss of Prushka, Meinya's role evolves into that of a traveling companion and support creature for Riko's group, using its unique senses to aid them on their journey deeper into the Abyss.
