Description
Mari Watanabe hails from the Watanabe family, positioned near the end of the Hundred Families and said to descend from General Watanabe Tsuna. As a branch family member with the household’s only vaunted magical talent, she remains largely removed from the political struggles and rivalries affecting other families.

She entered First High School alongside Katsuto Jumonji and Mayumi Saegusa, and their exceptional magical prowess earned them the collective title of The Big Three or the Triumvirate. Mari served as Public Morals Committee Chief, a role suited to her tough, disciplined, and sporty demeanor, as well as her combat excellence. Her leadership was both bossy and charming, prompting subordinates to refer to her as “Boss” or “big sister”—though she disliked the latter when used by peers due to its yakuza associations. Weak in organization, maintenance, and paperwork, she relied heavily on Shiba Tatsuya, whom she and Mayumi forcibly recruited.

Mari stands about 168 cm tall and weighs 54 kg, with short black hair and brown-gold eyes. Her sharp features and aura often lend her the description of a handsome young woman.

Strict, resilient, and outspoken, she often acts rough and harsh toward others but shows a softer, more affectionate side with her boyfriend, Chiba Naotsugu. She carries an older sister presence, sympathetic yet firm when needed. One of Mayumi Saegusa’s closest friends, the two frequently collaborate in mischief, teasing others or coercing them into following orders. Highly perceptive of others’ well-being, Mari voices disapproval when something troubles her. She openly criticized First High’s discriminatory Course system and took active steps—such as recruiting Tatsuya Shiba into the Public Morals Committee—to narrow the divide between Course 1 and Course 2 students.

After graduation, Mari enrolled in the National Defense Academy as a temporary sergeant in the martial arts department. She rents an apartment nearby and serves in the “Sword Corps” alongside Naotsugu, a unit mainly composed of National Defense Force First Division members. She participated in the Corps’ briefing to locate Kudou Minoru, a Paranormal Parasite who had killed Kudou Retsu, a figure closely tied to the First Division.

A combat magician specializing in anti-personnel magic, Mari possesses first-class combat ability. Her strength lies not in raw power or activation speed, but in versatility and the advanced skill of chaining multiple magics simultaneously, rendering her highly difficult to counter. She excels at targeting exposed sensory organs like auditory and olfactory senses to disable opponents and has mastered several unique techniques.

One signature technique is Dojigiri, or Multiple Slash, a method inherited from Genji swordsmen. She releases a small short blade from twin blades in her left hand aimed at the target’s head, while employing thin strings that emit a repulsion edge Pressure Slash. Combined with Gravity-Type acceleration magic, it becomes a three-pronged assault nearly impossible to evade entirely. She learned it accidentally through ancient texts and training with Chiba Naotsugu, adapting Pressure Slash to create her own variation.

She also utilizes Absorption-Type Magic with chemical dust to convert surrounding oxygen into carbon dioxide, inducing oxygen deprivation. Through Air Manipulation, she controls airflow to disperse chemicals from small containers, creating effects such as drunkenness or reduced mental resistance. This approach, part of her Commercial Aromatherapy, uses scents to provoke emotions and memories, effectively acting as a truth serum during interrogations, as demonstrated with Sekimoto Isao.

In the events of *The Girl Who Summons the Stars*, Mari accompanies Kokoa, a girl tied to a magical experiment, to the Kanto branch of the Magic Association following the rescue of the Watatsumi girls and the resolution of the Strategic-class Magic “Meteorite Fall” incident involving a descending USNA space station.

Her relationship with Chiba Naotsugu is a defining aspect of her life. They met during her kenjutsu training with the Chiba family and began dating, forming a battle couple dynamic. Her manner becomes noticeably softer and more affectionate in his presence.
