Description
Hidetoshi Dekisugi is a classmate of Nobita Nobi and a recurring figure in the Doraemon franchise, including its 3D animated film Stand by Me Doraemon 2. His name itself is a deliberate pun on the Japanese word dekisugiru, which means to over-achieve or excel, and this directly reflects his defining traits. From a young age, Dekisugi displays an extraordinary range of talents, consistently achieving perfect scores on his examinations and demonstrating prowess in various sports, including baseball, soccer, and track. Beyond academics and athletics, his abilities extend to artistic pursuits such as realistic painting, cooking, performing magic tricks, and sleight of hand. His intellectual curiosity is particularly strong in the fields of astronomy and philosophy.

Despite his exceptional capabilities, Dekisugi is characterized by a profound sense of modesty and humility. He never boasts about his achievements or looks down on others, and he consistently behaves in a gentlemanly and responsible manner. His approach to life is rational and logical; he dismisses superstitions in favor of scientifically explainable phenomena, and while he acknowledges the intriguing nature of Doraemon's futuristic gadgets, he is rarely mesmerized by them, preferring to rely on his own intellect. This combination of talent, good looks, and a calm demeanor earns him the admiration of his teachers and many of his female classmates. For Nobita Nobi, who struggles academically and physically, Dekisugi serves as a powerful antithesis, becoming a frequent source of insecurity and jealousy.

The relationship between Dekisugi and Shizuka Minamoto is one of close, respectful friendship. They often spend time together on homework, reading, playing board games, or engaging in outdoor painting. In the narrative of Stand by Me Doraemon, it is revealed that Dekisugi eventually proposed to Shizuka. However, she declined his proposal, explaining that because he was so capable and self-reliant, he did not truly need her support. This pivotal moment clarifies that her eventual choice to marry Nobita is rooted not in Dekisugi having any flaws, but rather in her desire to feel needed. His feelings for Shizuka are genuine and respectful, and he never uses his advantages to pressure her.

His dynamic with Nobita is complex. Nobita often resents Dekisugi and, with Doraemon's help, concocts schemes to sabotage him, damage his belongings, or interfere in his conversations with Shizuka. Dekisugi, however, never responds with anger or retaliation. Instead, he consistently treats Nobita with kindness and compassion, viewing him as a friend despite his jealous behavior. He has defended Nobita when he was bullied by their classmates Gian and Suneo, emphasizing that a person's value is not measured by test scores alone. On one occasion, he even secretly helped Shizuka bake a birthday cake for Nobita, demonstrating his capacity for quiet, generous acts toward his rival.

In Stand by Me Doraemon 2, Dekisugi appears during the timeline of Nobita and Shizuka's wedding. As an adult, he has followed his passion for astronomy and become an astronaut. He is seen attending Nobita's bachelor party alongside Gian and Suneo. Later, while working on assignment on the moon, he is unable to attend the wedding in person. Instead, he sends a warm holographic congratulatory message to the couple, showing that he remains on good terms with the entire friend group and continues to wish them well. His future is depicted as stable and successful, including having a son named Hideyo. Throughout the film, his role reinforces his established character: a highly capable individual who, despite his own feelings and successes, remains a principled, forgiving, and supportive friend.
