Sun Wukong is a Faunus from Vacuo, identifiable by his spiky blonde hair and matching prehensile monkey tail. He later moved to Mistral, attended Haven Academy, and transferred to Shade Academy where he leads Team SSSN. His early nomadic life involved traveling with his older cousin, Starr Sanzang. He discovered his Semblance, Via Sun, at age seven under a tree after Starr urged him to rest.
Sun exhibits a playful, mischievous personality with little regard for authority, demonstrated by stowing away on ships and evading law enforcement. Despite this, he displays loyalty and earnestness, particularly toward Blake Belladonna, whom he supports unconditionally after recognizing her Faunus heritage. He often acts impulsively but offers wisdom during critical moments, such as advising Blake against isolation. His leadership of Team SSSN is notably flawed; teammates criticize his distractibility and unpredictability, and he admits to being "the worst team leader ever" after repeatedly abandoning them for Blake’s missions.
His combat abilities leverage his Faunus traits: enhanced strength, agility, night vision, and tail dexterity. He wields Ruyi Bang and Jingu Bang, a collapsible staff that separates into twin gun-nunchucks. The staff deflects projectiles when spun and emits shockwaves when slammed, while the nunchucks enable sustained ranged attacks. His Semblance, Via Sun, generates tangible, glowing clones that execute his commands. Prolonged use drains his Aura, and mental attacks through the clones affect him directly. The clones exhibit physical strength but require concentration to maintain.
Sun first appears in Vale as a stowaway, eluding police and Team RWBY before befriending Blake. He aids her investigation into Dust robberies, leading to a confrontation with Roman Torchwick and the White Fang. He participates in the Vytal Festival tournament, contributing to Team SSSN’s victories. During the Grimm attack on Beacon, he attempts to dissuade Ruby and Weiss from dangerous pursuits but ultimately relents. After Beacon’s fall, he follows Blake to Menagerie, believing she is embarking on a solo mission. He assists in repelling a Sea Feilong during the voyage and stays with the Belladonna family upon arrival.
In Menagerie, Sun helps uncover White Fang infiltration. He is wounded by Ilia Amitola during a chase, leading Blake to realize the emotional toll of pushing allies away. After recovering, he supports her campaign against the White Fang, including gathering defenses for Haven Academy. His dedication strains relations with Team SSSN, who resent his absences, though Scarlet David acknowledges his actions blend nobility and selfishness.
In the spin-off *RWBY: Ice Queendom*, set between Volumes 1 and 2, Sun appears in a minor role. His involvement is limited to early episodes adapting his initial encounters with Blake and the White Fang stakeout. The narrative diverges into an original storyline focusing on Weiss Schnee’s nightmares, where Sun has no significant presence or development beyond these early arcs.
